Could Turner Leave “Being Human”?

Could Turner Leave “Being Human”?

February 23, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 7 Comments

Actor Aidan Turner is in high demand these days. He’s part of the cast of the British verison of “Being Human” and later this year he’ll be part of Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit.”

But does Turner’s involvement with “The Hobbit” mean he’ll soon be hanging up his vampire fans on “Human?”

Some fans believe that’s the case. Early episodes of the third season of the series seem to be hinting at an exit for Turner’s character of John Mitchell. It was set up by last year’s storyline in which Mitchell and fellow crazy vamp Daisy killed 20 people in a train boxcar.

“[The murder investigation] plays a massive part in the new season. It haunts him. I think to a certain extent he thought he got away with it,” Mitchell says. “He’s been so good at killing, it’s something he’s always specialized in—this one just seems to have gone a bit wrong because he was with Daisy, who’s crazy. It went further than they thought and it comes to bite him in the arse. It’s something he feels very guilty about, and he’s hidden from George, Nina and Annie. Now he just can’t hide it anymore. He needs to make some decisions—and that’s what you see him do in season 3. Does he admit to the murders and risk losing his friends? Does he go to prison? There is this whole host of things that he gets tied up with.”

As for whether or not he’s leaving, Mitchell isn’t confirming or denying anything.

“Well, that’s what the Internet does, isn’t it? It fuels gossip and stuff. It’s a long shoot over here for ‘The ‘Hobbit. It’s two movies. We haven’t talked yet about dates for series four of ‘Being Human’,” he says. “It’s so up in the air and it’s so far away that I can’t really commit to anything. And they need to plot out storylines and see how long they need Mitchell for, so I guess we won’t know until a later date what’s going on.”

I hope it all works out. The original/UK version of Being Human is the only one I’m interested in.

Exactly what shape would that leave the show in? The core element of the show is Mitchell and George’s relationship. I love Annie and Nina but the Mitchell/George dynamic just seems essential. What would they do…have George make another vampire friend? Troubling rumors for sure.

I imagine that the Being Human execs will try and work out a shooting schedule that lets Turner do both, like the Sherlock people did with Martin Freeman.

Tough call. Mitchell is the lynchpin of the series that holds the rest of the cast together.

Hmmm.. Mitchell really IS the story in the UK version of BH, where Josh is the the story in the US version.

Hmmm… they’d really have to introduce someone equally as compelling as Mitchell in order for this to work. I don’t think the UK Josh would be strong enough a character to keep the UK version interesting.

I like Turner. It would be sad if he left.

The Pilot was mostly about George, and that worked fine. Clearly, as it was made into a series.

Mitchell seems like the central character, because that’s the way they’ve worked it. Why wouldn’t they? He’s a vampire, and vampires are popular, plus, in case you hadn’t noticed, Aidan Turner is pretty hot.

The rest of the cast, however, are good enough to make it work, whether he’s there or not.
