The Hollywood Reporter’s Tim Goodman says that NBC’s Monday night line-up from 9 -11 p.m EST in the two worst hours on TV.
That line-up includes “The Cape” and “Harry’s Law.”
Here’s a sample of why he feels this way:
But my vote goes to NBC tonight for packaging The Cape and Harry’s Law together. How could this be more heinous than what the Peacock dishes out on Wednesday, you ask? Easy. Minute to Win It is cheap reality programming. Any third-level executive could shepherd that witless hour onto the air and get a better office out of it. Chase is the kind of show you put on the air when you can’t make Justified and you don’t know any good writers.
But The Cape looks like something that people were excited about — they had the ambition to make something different. And Harry’s Law is from David E. Kelley, who talked Kathy Bates into the title role.
Translation: Unlike the other two shows, some heavy lifting, organizing and greenlighting took place for these Monday shows. And what are we left with? A guy in a cape. In a show that looks like it wants to be something other than what the guy in the cape wants. Plus, he’s in a cape. No matter how many ways you draw that up on a napkin at the bar, you were drunk and you had a terrible idea. There’s no fixing it now.

Tim Goodman is a little bit of a douche isn’t he?
I like The Cape and know of many others that do as well. I’ve seen far worse hours of television. Wonder how he would like it if we bashed his hours of Kardashian laden “quality television”?

I still haven’t made up my mind about The Cape. I can see potential there and maybe it’ll be worth sticking around for a payoff. I’m hoping that it’ll be another SG:U or Fringe that needed a couple of episodes to get their footing and brilliance ensued.
I can’t comment on Harry’s Law, I’m too busy watching Castle and recording Grace Park… I mean Hawaii 5-0. 🙂
Shrewsky says
I really like Harry’s Law. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it when I saw the previews but I do. The Cape I’m still undecided about. I’m willing to give it a little bit more time to see where they go with it.

I call b.s. and Shenanigans.
Tim Goodman is smelling himself now that he’s stepped up from being a newspaper critic (I used to like reading him at SFGate.com/San Francisco Chronicle) to a Trade Paper.
I think The Cape is hella-fun! I love the writing. Keith David kills me because his character is just such a jolly crime master. And the Carnival of Crime gang is fun to watch. (I don’t generally like midgets, but Rolo is fun to watch.) And Summer Glau is properly mysterious and has really become a beautiful young woman…who looks like she’s got something going on inside her brain.
This show is just beginning and still developing.
It does have the potential, especially with all of the possible arch-villians.
We’ve seen Chess and Scales.
Who could be next? I think it’s going to develope into a great show.

I haven’t seen Harry’s Law (and I have no intention of ever watching it), but having watched several episodes of The Cape, I’m liking it better than I did after the premiere. I still find a cape to be kind of a lame object for a superhero to use as a vehicle for crime fighting, but I’m liking the characters more and more. I do hope people give it a chance.

I was sketchy going into The Cape…but damn….its so far its been enjoyable and worth my time. Compared to how long I let Heroes string me along….The Cape seems to have much better writing, far better characters, and better actors. Hope it can hang around.
WonderJenn says
…And The Cape has had been dropped to 10 eps instead of 13 and production has stopped. So long what could have been a fun show.
Sam Sloan says
Goodman may not like Harry’s Law, starring Kathy Bates, but her and David Kelley fans seem to love it so far.
Mark F. says
Yep, it’s looking pretty grim for The Cape. Too bad. At least it lasted longer than Happy Town which ABC canceled after 2 or 3 episodes.
Michael Hickerson says
Well, it sounds like the Cape won’t be around much longer….
Episode order cut.
VyseN1 says
Not that the Cape is that good, but I would say garbage like “Jersey Shore” is the worst TV has to offer.
Summer Brooks says
I’d rather watch 5 hours of “The Cape” than those endlessly vomitous stretches of “Real Houseskanks Who Give Golddiggers a Bad Name”, or “Bad Girls of a Guy’s Worst Beer Goggles Night” that keep showing up on my TV listings when I’m scrolling through looking for something to watch.
Talk about completely useless people getting on television for no good reason. Hell, “Bully Beatdown” has more socially redeeming qualities in one episode than all of the Housewives of all the unfortunate cities they live in put together.
There are “characters” on “The Cape”. They should move it to USA Network and keep it at 13 episodes.
EPS says
I really like Harry’s Law. I don’t take it seriously, love Kathy Bates’ sardonic presentation and appreciate every single thing that makes it more fun than say, Ally McBealish TV. The Cape just doesn’t hold my interest, however, were I a 12yo boy I am sure that I would like it.
Barry from Athens says
I’m enjoying The Cape, though I think the writing could be better. I definitely enjoy the sense that there’s more backstory. I’m enjoying the mother/son subplot. I am really glad that there is tension between the Carnival and The Cape. I hope it stays a second season.
Gary from Jacksonville says
I would suggest spinning off the carnival and give Keith David his own show.
