Witwer Predicts “Being Human” Backlash

January 18, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 7 Comments

“Being Human” star Sam Witwer says it would be nice if fans of the original version of “Being Human” liked and watched the new American version, but he isn’t counting on that happening.

“It would be nice to say that we can count on the British audience coming over to us, but I don’t think we can,” tells Collidor. “I just don’t think they’re going to readily accept it that quickly. [Fans are] going to see people playing… versions of the characters that they know and love, and they’re going to have a hard time accepting that.”

“Don’t tune in, if you really think it’s going to be that terrible. But the simple fact of the matter is that nothing that we’re doing is going to negate what the British series has done,” he added.

He went on to say that he thinks critical reception to the show could change over the season’s thirteen episodes.

“There are going to be a lot of people who just talk s**t, and they’re going to be very angry that this was done in a North American way at all,” he suggested. “I’m more concerned with what people are going to be saying a year from now, or half a year from now, once it’s settled in a bit.”

I’m not watching it but it’s not because I don’t want to. I’m not watching it because I refuse to watch any new series on SyFy after what they did to SGU and Caprica.

It pissed me off in a big way seeing commercials for the upcoming Being Human while I watched the last 5 episodes of the SyFy canceled Caprica.

I hear you AndyMac. That is why I refused to watch SGU and Caprica after they canceled Atlantis.

    Same thing, right? 🙂

    I hope Witwer’s wrong.

We’re fans of the original British series, and we watched the first episode of the American version. We’ll keep watching it. It didn’t grab us instantly the way the British one did, but we expect it to grow on us.

I will watch both…the British version is better though. I think if the New version wanted to make a bigger impact they should have changed more things than just minor background stories. You can’t help compare the actors in the two shows when they went for almost the same types of people. I think it’s really kind of funny when SyFy calls it “original” programming. I know they can re-imagine better than that.

I’m American & I have no desire to see the American version. It’s not just the British fans. Why remake something when the original is still on the air & available in the US? It’s silly to me.

Being British and a big fan of Being Human I would be interested to see the American version. But more often than not these Americanized versions of overseas shows fail. The US version of the Office is good, but their version of Kath and Kim an Australian classic comedy completely missed the point by casting way too glamorous actors. Just a couple of recent examples, I could name dozens of others that tanked.

Interesting. I have not seen it. Is it going to be on Hulu?
Funny thing about different people playing the same roles in a different country, the British version had a pilot with different people playing the roles. Not sure why they changed. I liked both sets of characters for different reasons.
Hopefully, someone gets into Syfy and takes it back to a full SciFi channel again.
