“Big Bang” Stars Hint at Future Developments

January 18, 2011 By Mike Hickerson 10 Comments

If you’ve been watching “The Big Bang Theory” this season, you may have noticed that Penny could be re-evaluating her break-up with Leonard. And that it appears a reunion could be on the horizon.

But that doesn’t mean there won’t be a bump or two along the way.

According to Kunal Nayyar, actress Aarti Mann will return as Raj’s sister in an upcoming episode.

“Last time [his sister and Leonard] just slept together and Raj was fine because she didn’t want anything long-term or serious. But this time they start to date and it may come to blows,” Nayyar tells EW. “I hope [Aarti] is back for awhile. She’s a great actress.”

That romance could push things forward with Penny.

“I think that might kick up something with Penny,” says actress Kaley Cuoco. “I think she is going to get a little jealous. She doesn’t realize she is in love with him until people take his attention away from her.”

Biggest mistake the writers made was breaking those two up in the first place. There was a lot of potential for better stories with Penny in the mix as Leonard’s #1 gal and the angst that would cause Sheldon.

Right on Sam – I thought I was the only person to think of that. As a writer, that was my first reaction: what a great setup to toss a thousand Sheldon jokes out there.

I actually think they got them together too soon. Should have strung it out more a’la’ Cheers, but just not as long.

Personally, I’m with Sam and Michael on this one. Would like to see them back together and enjoy the fun of each trying to live in the others world.. Plus, anything that irritates Sheldon is good for a ton of funny.

The classic romantic comedy plot goes Boy meets girl*. Boy loses girl. Boy wins girl back.**

Big Bang Theory is currently at stage two. Since we’re talking a years-long sitcom run rather than an a 90-minute movie, this could go on for a while.

*”Boy” and “Girl” chosen only for brevity. Fill in your own favorite sexes for protagonist and object of affection.

**Not counting the SF variation of, “Boy builds better girl.”

Not being a writer, I think it would be more interesting for Penny and Sheldon to eventually get together . . .

    BAZINGA!!!

Seriously, I did not mind the split so much as how it was done (the whole evil Wheaton at the bowling alley thing was weak). But it did set up some good post-breakup material

Plus at the time all the “give” had been on Penny’s side. Where was Leonard learning to dance, or going out to parties, etc. There was one episode of him trying to blend in (football day), and a mention that he had to watch Sex in the City, but other than that it was all Penny being accommodating to Leonard’s lifestyle.

Well, OK . . . the whole Sex in the City thing is pretty brutal.

Anyway, just saying there was room there for more fun before (temporarily) breaking up.

@Emilio. The producers have said that they will never get Sheldon and Penny together….

    and I think that’s a good thing.

    I know, hence the “BAZINGA!!”

Although I rate that a higher possibility than Penny and Howard. Still, never is a long time; with the 3-year renewal, one has to imagine all sorts of things may have to be reconsidered if they want to keep the series fresh.

Season 4 was/is already a step down in quality from Season 3, which itself was a notch or two down from the quality of Seasons 1 & 2.

Before I get yelled at, I still like the show, but while I can pick an episode at random from the first two seasons and be happy to sit and watch it, that is not the case for Season 3, and definitively not for Season 4.

My opinion only, but what is changed is the usual for most comedy shows . . . a shift from narrative and seamless plots toward set-ups for one-liners and isolated vignettes. I think the show suffered a bit because of it, and I hope they get back to smart writing instead on continuing to write one-off jokes.

@Michael Hickerson – If the producers had originally stated that Leonard and Penny were to never get back together, why has there been such teasing in the series thus far? We’ve seen episodes where Penny alone has had to confront the issues regarding her breakup with Leonard, and each time she has not handled it well, and one of those stories happened with Leonard not even being around.

The producers may have meant it at the time, but I think they see the fan reaction regarding them as a couple, and I personally found it most enjoyable. The stories were quite engaging in seeing this mis-matched couple which had elements for its own comedy, but as people have already pointed out their relationship made Sheldon absolutely mental. Add to the fact that Sheldon now has his own “girlfriend” (who proclaims that Penny is her best friend as well) there is a definite gold mine of comedic material which has yet to be tapped.

@Ben . . . the producers said in one of their interviews that SHELDON and Penny would never get together.

That said, they had more intimate times in the first two seasons then did Leonard and Penny.
