The long awaited reboot of “The Green Hornet” got off to a solid start over the weekend. The Seth Rogen-led movie took in $34 this weekend and could take in close to $40 million for the four-day holiday weekend.
“January and February have often been used as a time to launch B-list heroes that can’t compete with the sheer muscle of summer players,” says Gitesh Pandya of BoxOfficeGuru.com. “Hornet plays right into the type of junk food that is very much in demand at this time.”
Second place went to director Ron Howard’s “The Dilemma.” The comedy took in $17.4 million.
Third place was held by last week’s top draw, “True Grit” with $11.2 million. The film has passed $100 million at the box-office and is on track to be the biggest box-office hit yet for the Coen brothers.
The British drama “The King’s Speech” cracked the top five, taking fourth place and doing $9.1 million over three days. The ballet drama “Black Swan” was fifth with $8.1 million, lifting its gross to $44.6 million.
Overall ticket sales were down 24% from this time last year.
