After 28 years of waiting, “Tron” fans finally got a sequel.
The follow-up to the cult favorite took in $43.6 million at the box-office this weekend. That’s good enough for first place.
The film also took in another $10 million on IMAX showings.
The real test now is to see how much staying power the sequel has. A wide range of new films hit theaters this week to try and lure in holiday audiences.
The animated comedy “Yogi Bear” took the second spot with $16.7 million, meeting the high end of expectations, followed by “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” with $12.4 million. The fantasy film has earned $42.8 million in 10 days.
Mark Wahlberg’s drama “The Fighter” continues to do well in limited release. It earned $12.2 million on 2,500 screens, good for fourth place, and lifted its total to $12.6 million in two weekends.
“The Tourist”, the thriller starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, was fifth with $8.7 million. The Tourist has collected $30.8 million in two weeks.
