“Iron Man 3” Will Be Sequel to Four Movies

December 7, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 3 Comments

As the first post-“Avengers” Marvel sequel, “Iron Man 3” will serve not only as a sequel to this year’s hit film but three others.

Jon Favreau says the third installment will be a sequel to “Thor,” “Captain America” and “The Avengers” as well as a new installment focusing on Tony Stark.

“In theory, ‘Iron Man 3’ is going to be a sequel or continuation of Thor, Hulk, Captain America and Avengers,” Favreau said. “This whole world… I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys.”

Favreau also stated that he has no way of knowing what Iron Man 3 will be about, given that its plot will depend on the final versions of the four other films.

“Honestly, right now Captain America and Thor are their big priorities, and you learn things by shooting and making movies,” Favreau declared. “The script is one thing, but when you actually see what you land on at the editing room – especially with Marvel where they film, cut, film some more and shape the film – you really learn as you go.”

This makes me slightly worried. I fear that even Favreau won’t be able to save this from becoming a Spiderman 3 type disaster with too many characters and too little depth.

I think it could work. Call it a 2 hour, 20 minutes movie with about a half hour devoted to wrapping up issues from those other films. Just don’t focus on it.

I don’t see this as a Spiderman 3 scenario with too many characters. I understand what Jon Favreau is saying. He simply wants to wait to see how “the universe will unfold” as the stories of Thor, America, and Avengers are delivered. Once those happens he’ll be able to determine what the universe looks like and craft a story from that point.

I’m fairly certain that’s what he meant when he said Iron Man 3 would be a sequel to four movies.
