CW Planning for “Smallville” Replacement

December 4, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 18 Comments

As “Smallville” winds down its run on the CW, the network is looking for a series to step in and take its place.

To that end, the network is reportedly considering a new series based on another DC Comics character, Raven.

Raven is a member of young superhero team the Teen Titans who was introduced in the 80’s. The character has seen a rise in popularity as part of the animated “Teen Titans” series.

According to reports, Diego Guitirrez, who has worked on “V” and “Without a Trace,” has been asked to write and develop a pilot.

We’ll keep you up to date on developments as we have them.

I was hoping for a sort of continuation of the current series (minus the main 3 characters of course) in the guise of the JLA. Even Hartley could have returned, if he so desired, for that one.

There are so many characters to choose from Smallville. Justice League,The Legion or Green Arrow.

This has been an amazing season and I love that they’re, finally, aligning the show with Superman cannon. I’d love to see something happen with the JLA. I think it would be fun to watch Green Arrow and Black Canary running around with the plethora of interesting DCU characters around. Tie in The Flash and Green Lantern and you’ve just made me a loyal viewer.

A Raven series? CW will lose me on that…. I hate Teen Titans! A JLA series would be cool though!!

The teen titians u will lose the public but if u start with as a grown man leaving Bat-man then the people will understand that raven is robin the boy wonder and that he broke away from the team to do he’s own thing and u can base the story on that. CW u can hit me up and let me now how u feel about that. OK!

Am I missing something? I thought Nightwing was Robin after he broke away from TT, and that Raven was the girl empath?

I haven’t followed a lot of comics in a long time, so if I’m wrong I’ll chalk it up to gettin’ old… but I didn’t think I was that out of touch with the DC characters?

They can call it something like “That’s so Raven”. Wait, wasn’t that done already? No one mentioned the JSA. A series with older heroes mentoring younger ones should provide some good story lines.

Raven would be a bad idea! I have been loving Smallville this season. I hope they can come up with something to take the Smallville mantle, but I don’t think that is a good idea!

Summer, you are correct. Nightwing is the original Robin. Raven is a female empath, only with cool “shadow soul” powers and teleportation

Raven is a surprising choice. She’s not exactly in DC’s top 20 most well-known characters.

Then again, she’s an empathic teen who takes on the suffering of others and is tormented by the fact she’s the daughter of a demon.

Lots of whiny teen angst for CW’s core audience.

I would be behind this idea… If they got Christina Ricci to play Raven!

This is actually a good move on the part of CW/DC/WB if they get the story halfway straight. Raven is a very compelling character based upon her background and lineage. The question is how they’ll play that out? Will she be on the run, fighting a ‘demon-of-the-week’ that her father, Trigon, has sent after her? Will she be the one hunting down her father, fighting said ‘demon-of-the-week”? Along the way, meeting villains and heroes alike, like Dr. Light or Cyborg or Kid Flash (since they’ve already been introduced in ‘Smallville’). Maybe they can even incorporate Nightwing into the storyline somewhere as her cameo partner on specific missions. While it would be really disappointing to have them try to build up to a Teen Titans reunion, it WOULD be cool to see the cast of characters pop up occasionally. Again, the possibilities are endless. It actually would be even cooler if Dr. Light was her main nemesis as the minion of her father, Trigon.

    I’m down.

OOOH, they could even cast Brother Blood to be her main nemesis.

    This show definitely has possibilities.

“Am I missing something? I thought Nightwing was Robin after he broke away from TT, and that Raven was the girl empath?”

Summer, it’d take too long to explain, but it really depends on WHICH TT team you’re talking about.

Nightwing (now Batman) is Dick Grayson, the first Robin.

The CURRENT Robin is Damian Wayne (the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia Al Ghul – well, he’s really a test tube baby made from their genetic stock) from a story way back in the 80’s called “Son of a Demon”. Again, another LOOOONG story.

Raven has died and been reborn so many times, that while the character is virtually the same, she’s always slightly different with each reincarnation.

@KG, Holy Cow… when did all that happen? No, don’t tell me. It’d just make me feel old 🙂

Seriously, the last TT comic I think owned was a TT-XMen crossover, back when Dick Grayson was still Robin, and that red haired alien warrior princess… was her name Starfire? I don’t think I own it anymore, and I’m not even sure all of my non-GN comics are all on one shelf anymore.

I think it would be cool if they had the JLA as well which will include aquaman, the flash (thought his epsiode was good), the green arrow, and Steel the robotic arm man or w/e.

They already had a justice league sorta when they were taking down lex’s factory in season 8 I think or 9. Might as well continue it and if they do any other dc charchter why not the young justice with superboy. He already has the shirt and was on the last episode

I find myself wondering if the general TV audience will confuse this Raven with either the “That’s so Raven” show or even “The Crow”. I find myself wondering if it will make it past the first year. A teen titans type show is certainly different though, and a Robin, Cyborg, Speedy, or Kid Flash appearance could be around the corner.
