With showings selling out before “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part One” opened Friday, the question wasn’t if the movie would top the box-office over the weekend, but by how much.
The first half of the final installment of the franchise took in $125.1 million in its opening weekend. That was the largest grossing weekend for a Potter film and the sixth largest opening of all-time. It was also the second large November opening for a movie ever.
And it appears that audiences were going to see Harry and only Harry. There was a substantial drop-off from one to two. Second place went to “Megamind” with $16.1 million.
Third went to “Unstoppable” with $13 million. “Due Date” was fourth with $9.1 million. Fifth place went to newcomer “The Next Three Days.”
