A reboot of “The Wizard of Oz” is getting closer to becoming a reality.
According to Deadline, Warner Brothers has targeted Oscar-winner Robert Zemeckis to bring the re-imagined world of Oz to life again on the big-screen. The new version of Oz would be live-action and not the motion-capture animated features that Zemeckis has directed over the past several years.
Warner wants to compete with Disney for an Oz film in theaters. Disney has Robert Downey, Jr. attached to its project “The Great and Powerful Oz” Disney’s project is also being produced by Sam Raimi.
Warner owns the rights to the original classic film and is eager to reboot it for audiences.
What about the Tin Man series Syfy did a few years back?
There’s no way you can capture the magic of the first movie and this reboot will be punished for even trying.
That assumes that they’re trying to capture the magic of a ~70 year old film. I wonder if they can capture their own kind of magic based on a classic tale.
Of course, I was disappointed in “Alice in Wonderland,” so…
If they did Wicked or an Oz movie closer to the book, it could actually be really good. No rage here.
There was a time when I would have given Zemeckis the benefit of the doubt on this one. However, look at his resume on IMDM and you will see his best work is ten to twenty-five years behind him.
Over the past ten years he has been responsible for Ghost Ship, Thirteen Ghosts, Beowulf and House of Wax among others. His reputation as a top flight film maker has fallen more then a little over the past decade.
I didn’t LOVE “Tin Man”, but it was a pretty decent reinterpretation of the story. However, to this day, I have to pop in “The Wiz”… *easin’ on down the road*
Does that meen Dorothy will be wearing silver shoes and they will cover the last third of the book?
