“Potter” Stars Don’t Want More

November 15, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 9 Comments

While fans across the globe may be clamoring for more “Harry Potter,” two of the actors involved in the film franchise are content should author J.K. Rowling decide to not write any more.

Rowling sent shock waves through the Potter fandom recently when she said she might have an idea for three more books. Fans were ecstatic, as was Warner Brothers, who produces the films.

But that’s not good news to Daniel Radcliffe or Emma Watson.

Radcliffe says he’s not interested in playing Potter again after “The Deathly Hallows” completes is theatrical run.

“Oh God, she promised me categorically that there wouldn’t be another book involving Harry,” he said on “Oprah”, adding that it was “very doubtful” he’d ever again play the character.

Watson may be looking to pursue another career beyond acting as well.

“It, like, happened when I was very young, and this was one role, and it transformed the whole of my life, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that this is what’s going to make me happy,” she said. “I want to be able to explore a few other things as well.”

wow they sound like a couple of spoiled brats. I can see Watson meeting some mucisian in college, getting hooked on drugs, and spending all her money. Then she’ll end up doing the adult movies we really want to see, like “Hermoine does Dumbledore”, “Hermoine’s Hiney”, etc… etc…

I say good for them. They’ve lived and breathed these characters since they were ten years old, and it’s time to let them stretch their wings and grow up. I’m thrilled that, for the most part, we were able to see the same set of actors through the entire series. There had been talk around the third or fourth movie that they were going to recast the stars because they were getting “too old.”

Spoiled brats? Because they don’t want to continue to be Harry and Hermione? I say “Go for it!”. If Emma Watson wants to do something besides being an actress who are you to say she can’t?

As Mitch said, I’m glad we got the continuity of having the same folks for all 7 movies but it’s time to let them get on with their lives.

How are they spoiled brats? They have played these characters for 8 movies, and what 10 years or something like that?

I am also glad we had the same actors for all of the films, but who can blame them for wanting to do something different now?

I don’t see them as spoiled brats…they’ve been playing these characters long enough. Playing the same character can get boring after a while…if they want to continue acting I would think they’d want to play other parts(most actors do) and if they want to move on to something else…why not…it’s their life.

    Two things.

One, JKR made an offhand comment that she had enough background material and what not worked out that she COULD write up to three more books, but it sounded more like the “I could but forget it” context than the “for when I go back to the well” context. Any devoted Potter fan is well aware that she fleshed things out to ridiculous lengths, even for things barely mentioned in the books themselves.

Two, everyone assumes that if she did write more books in the Potter universe, that it would focus on the Trio and the post-war years. There’s no reason at all to assume that. There would have to be connections, of course, but given the status quo by the end, there are plenty of other avenues that could be pursued.

As for the “spoiled brat” comment…please. If anything, this demonstrates how level-headed they are, because they’re not letting fame get to their heads.

Spoiled brats? Take a good look in the mirror.

Actors aren’t here at your beck and call to play the roles you want. It’s a job, and if they don’t feel they can do the role justice anymore or want to move on, who are we to stop them? Yet another example of this sense of entitlement fans think they have over the genre and its creations.

Thanks Michael. I was trying to find a nice way to say the same thing but couldn’t come up with something quite as tactful.

A decision made when they were 10 years old shouldn’t lock them into a career/character for life. If they’ve fulfilled their current contracts then that is enough. They should be able to do other movies or grad school or experimental dance or whatever without the wrath of fandom on them for the rest of their lives.
