The highly anticipated animated comedy “MegaMind” kicked off the holiday movie season this weekend with a bang. The film took in $47.6 million as part of a weekend that saw Hollywood take in $154 million overall. That’s the best overall box-office total for a November weekend ever, topping the first weekend of November last year with $153 million.
Three newcomers opened in the top three spots, each taking in at least $20 million.
Second place went to the comedy “Due Date.” The comedy team of Robert Downey, Jr. and Zach Galifianakis took in $33.5 million in the opening weekend. The comedy has been heavily promoted since mid-summer and was expected to do well.
In third place was R-rated movie, “For Colored Girls,” taking in $20 million.
After that, it was a steep drop from third to fourth. “Red” was in fourth with $8.8 million. And in fifth, dropping 66% was “Saw 3D” with $8.2 million.
