Who Might Kirk and Company Face in the Next “Trek”?

October 26, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 8 Comments

As the writers work on the script for the follow-up to last year’s “Star Trek,” many of us have heard rumors of just which character from the original 79 episodes might make a return appearance. And while early speculation centered on Khan, it appears that the writers are moving away from idea and considering several other aliens or characters from the classic run.

According to Badass Digest, a source close to the production says the crew of the starship Enterprise won’t face a “traditional” bad guy at all. But here’s the interesting part: The source also says that the film will feature one of these five classic “Trek” characters/alien races.

It could be Harry Mudd, the Horta, the Talosians, Trelane or Gary Mitchell.

There are lots of rumors that the second installment in the rebooted franchise will center on the Klingons (who were cut from the first film, though you can see them in the deleted scenes on the Blu-Ray or DVD). Could one of these characters or alien races be a good compliment to them?

I’ll admit that I’m intrigued by the idea of Gary Mitchell returning, though I’m not sure a cinematic retelling of “Where No Man Has Gone Before” would be the best idea.

Someone floated the idea of casting Paul Giamatti as Harry Mudd. That’d be sweet.

I think the films should try and do things that Rodenberry couldn’t do in the 60s: a full-on war between the 23rd-century Federation and the Klingons.

hell. Throw in the klingons, romulans, phasers and photon torpedos. As long it isn’t like ST 5, it should be good.

There is one race we have only seen once and was mentioned a few times since their appearance in the episode “Errand of Mercy”- the Organians. As for the war between the Federation and the Klingons, it was the basis for the very first original story based on Kirk and crew…Spock Must Die written by James Blish who was novelizing the scripts from the original series at the time. If JJ and crew could expand on that book and make it into a kick ass film it would be fun to watch.

And the same thing about Gary Mitchell could also be said about the Talosians. How well would a big screen retelling of “The Cage” (the original pilot, scenes of which were used in “The Menagerie”) go over since Christopher Pike was in the center seat when we first met them. I know that this is an alternate timeline but now we are talking about the basis of everything that has followed ever since and I don’t know how much of a whiplash retelling these two stories (“The Cage” and “Where No Man has Gone Before”) will cause amongst the hardcore fanbase and I think that there needs to be at least one more Khan-level movie done by JJ and the gang before reexamining these two stories. The Horta would probably do good since it barely had air time in “Devil in the Dark” and that story could probably be expanded to a full length movie, same with “Who Mourns for Adonais” so we can see what happens to Lieutenant Carolyn Palamas and her child since showing this or even mentioning that she was pregnant was a big no-no at the time.

The way the 1st movie ended, the Romulan Empire could think the Federation might retaliate. So they launch a pre-emptive strike, starting the Romulan war.

If there is a Romulan War it would be a second one, because if memory serves, the first one actually occurred before James Kirk was even born, which of course is prior to the entire timeline shift.

I thing the Tholians might be a good choice, they only barely appeared in 1 episode so the writers would have lots of room to do what ever they want and the fans won’t get mad about them screwing a classic villian.
