SyFy Green Lights New “BSG” Spin-Off

October 25, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 11 Comments

battlestar-galactica-logoWhile we don’t yet know if we’ll get a second season of “Caprica” yet, we can tell you that SyFy isn’t ready to let the “Battlestar Galactica” universe rest.

The cable outlet has given the go-head for a two-hour movie/pilot for “Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome.” The potential series will be a prequel and follow a young William Adama during the Cylon war.

Here’s the press release from SyFy with all the details:

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20’s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet… the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet. “The ‘Galactica’ universe as re-imagined by Ron Moore and David Eick is rich with possibilities and backstory,” said SyFy’s Mark Stern. “We jumped at the chance to revisit the William Adama character and explore this exciting chapter in the BSG narrative which falls between the events of the original series and the prequel, ‘Caprica,’ currently airing on Syfy.”

“While maintaining the themes of politics, social propaganda, and the timeless question: what does it mean to be human? – ‘Blood & Chrome’ will also return us to the authentic, relentless depiction of combat and the agony and ecstasy of human-Cylon war, which was the hallmark of ‘Battlestar Galactica’s’ early seasons,” said Eick. Michael Taylor wrote the teleplay from a story by Eick, Taylor and Bradley Thompson & David Weddle.

I would look forward to a BSG prequel that covers this important part of that universe’s history. I was greatly disappointed in Caprica, in all honesty I think a mini-series written more like a documentary would have better suited that particular prequel. I just feel that they have forced a much more convoluted story line into these events than was necessary, a documentary type mini-series would have allowed them to create a back story that is simple, but detailed and would have fit better into the BSG universe. Plus the Adama families involvement in these events seems shoehorned in.

Interesting that this new doesn’t generate reboot-rage despite Caprica being a snooze fest and the last 2 seasons of BSG being just plain awful. As much as I love to blame Ron Moore for BSG’s decline in quality I’m sure he was doing the best he could with the mandate from the network.

Let it go SyFy. We really need a Mansquito 2, focus on that (you can’t screw that up anymore than it already is).

While I loved BSG I think they are beating a dead horse here. I thought the Plan was really kind of boring and while Caprica is unique and different in comparison to BSG it’s really (dare I say this) Stargate Universe that has become SyFy’s spiritual successor to BSG.

If they were actually going to continue a story about man and machine I’d prefer an update where they bring it into today…pick up where they left off with Head SIx and Head Baltar in modern day New York ( that’s where the real unanswered questions lie in my opinion). But then again maybe they should just let it go…but another story about the Adama family…not interested…most of those questions have already been answered.

Why do I even come to this site? Half the comments are people unfairly crapping all over the shows I watch.

If they actually do it, I’ll give it a shot. Wonder who will play Adama and Tighe?
And, will Richard Hatch figure out some way to weasel his way into this one? I keep waiting from him to appear on Caprica.

@Arkle: I’ve come to the conclusion that some people only exist to spread negativity. Most of them are emboldened by the anonymity of the internet.

If they say it once or twice, I tend to acknowledge their opinion and maybe discuss their points with them. If they keep dumping without offering any bits of constructive criticism, I ignore them. It’s not worth my time to engage someone who is so entrenched in their negativity that they refuse to acknowledge anything else.

As someone who likes BSG & Caprica I would like to see this BUT I don’t want to see it until Caprica is over. I don’t really want to watch shows from two different time lines in the same universe at the same time.

If the new show overlaps with Caprica then fine but I don’t see how that can work. It seems to me like Caprica is how this whole mess got started in the first place. I’m guessing it’s quite a while before we get to the Cylon War.

Trek and Stargate had multiple shows on at the same time but those shows were always in sync.
