Routh Back in the Running for “Superman” Reboot

October 19, 2010 By News Droid 14 Comments

When news broke that Warner Brothers was rebooting Superman, the first question many of us asked was, “Will actor Brandon Routh be back as the Man of Steel?”

At first, the answer appeared to be no. The studio reportedly wanted a clean slate for the reboot.

But now it appears that Routh may be back in the running for the role.

Director Zach Snyder says that the on-line groundswell of support for Routh as the Man of Steel has persuaded him to consider Routh for the role.

Routh isn’t guaranteed the part, but he will at least be part of the casting process according to Comic Book Resources.

In an interview, Snyder is quoted as saying about the Internet campaign to cast Routh in the new movie, “I know! I didn’t realize there was such a groundswell!”

Yeah, give Brandon another go, he did alright in ‘Chuck’.

I thought Routh’s portrayal of Superman was the best thing about the last movie. He did exactly what they asked him to do, which was continue where Reeve left off. He shouldn’t be punished for what was otherwise a poor script.

Nothing against Routh, but I do think a reboot should be a clean slate.

I think welling should be the one for the role. He is the best thing ever happen to the Superman franchise

Routh is the closest thing to what I expect from a Superman since Christopher Reeve. With that in mind, I think he is perfect to continue the role — reboot or not.

Glad to hear it. It wasn’t his fault that Superman Returns was so terrible.

I agree with everything said here about Brandon Routh being the best Superman since Christopher Reeve. I’d love to see him back in the cape again.

Tom Welling does a decent job on Smallville, but I like Routh much more.

Above all else, keep Nic Cage away from the cape.

I have to agree. I though he did a great job in the character of Superman and he played a fun Clark Kent. I think he filled the cape perfectly. Now if we could just get a great Superman story to accompany Routh’s performance, I think we could really have something great.

The one thing that cannot be denied is that Bryan Singer knows how to cast parts, Zack Snyder can make beautiful looking movies and Christopher Nolan knows how to spin a yarn. Singer’s cast + Snyder’s visuals + Nolan’s story is probably a winner.

I think he did a really good job but since they want to start over, why not put someone else in the spot. Will they be doing the same thing for the other characters also?

It worked so well for The Hulk………..

I think Brandon Routh should be even another chance to return as Superman. Routh was only doing what he was suppose to do in the eyes of the director (Bryan Singer). Yes the movie could have been a lot better with more action but this as nothing to do with Routh’s abilities because I thought he was very convincing as Superman. He is now a more polished actor who has a much better idea at what people will be looking for in a modern day Superman and I believe Routh will deliver a superb performance as long as there is a good stript and strong story line with good supporting acter Routh will make Superman sore too new heights.

Routh was a good choice, but he did not have the look because Singer felt a change was needed. Wrong! Get back the Reeve costume, dye the hair black and part it on the left so a correct “S” curl will happen. And for God’s sake, don’t give Brandon a 12 year old’s hair cut. It’s Superman, not Superchild. Some changes in super heroes costumes work for the actor, but Brandon’s costume was a bust from the beginning, and die hard fans let Bryan Singer know it when the first picture of Brandon was released. The colors were so wrong. Get the right colors back. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Richard Donner gave Reeve the look straight from the comic book, Singer should have done the same. If Brandon doesn’t do the next movie, I hope that whoever does get the role, is given the real look of Superman. I believe it will be a plus for the next film. But I do believe that Brandon Routh should get another shot as the man of steel.

Didn’t like SR but I would love to see Routh back. He was great in Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

I cannot see what all the criticism about how dreadful “Superman Returns” did at the box office when it made more than “Batman Begins”. Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins was in my personal opinion was just a fine movie, which I did not enjoy. Batman only got it’s tick and MAJOR popularity world wide when “The Dark Knight” made Box Office history that year, which I believe the untimely death of the great Heath contribute somewhat to the super hit aside from the brilliantly directing of Nolan who (personally) did the contrary to the first, Batman Begins. My point is just because Nolan created this new perception of what Comics should be in the 21st Century – Realisim in the form of three dimensional characters, is by the way fantastic!! Does not mean you cannot retain a little of the old even if it is just a touch. I miss the old Batman movies. Tim Burton style, I thought, captured the ‘Gotham City’ just as you would picture it in the comics. With this reboot of Superman, I can see the complication of casting Brandon Routh as superman but it is not one that cannot be solved. It will be a terrible mistake not to cast our true 21st century superman, Brandon Routh…and to all those comic lovers, see past his good looks and Bryan Singer and you have your superman, besides, superman is suppose to be good looking, something Nolan seems to neglected in….well all his movies…he seems to like cast actors with unique beauty or not at all…
Brandon Routh is the best choice to make!!!!

Not Brandon, Tom Welling is the best choice! He’s been Clark/Superman for the past 10 years on Smallville! He’s by far the best choice for the roll. Tom not only has the look, but has Clark/Superman down more so than Brandon. TOM WELLING All the way!!!!
