Fans React to “Star Wars 3-D” News

September 30, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 8 Comments

Once upon a time, the thought of seeing “Star Wars” again on the big-screen sent a chill down the spine of most fanboys and fangirls.

Then George Lucas gave the Special Editions and the prequel trilogy and the fans got a polarized.

So it’s no surprise that news that Lucas is working on 3-D versions of the movies was met with applause by some and scorn by others.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, reaction across the Internet was mixed. Some said they’d be first in line while others said it was just another sign that “Star Wars” has lost sight of what made it magic in the first place. Some expect the 3-D to ruin the franchise while others are unhappy that Lucas will start with “The Phantom Menace” first and not “A New Hope.”

Here’s what the Hollywood Reporter had to say about the situation:

On paper, the news should be every fanboy’s dream. The groundbreaking nature and scope of Lucas’s original trilogy, launched in 1977, have practically begged for a 3D treatment to match its ambitions. But for many of the die-hards, that starship has long since sailed.

A lot has happened in the three decades between the theatrical release of “Return of the Jedi” in 1983 and what will be the first of the new 3D versions. For one thing, Lucas made three other movies in the saga, which were almost universally panned. He also has already done several rereleases and recuts of the original trilogy that updated the effects and added new or deleted footage in ways that many found sacrilegious (see: the widespread “Han Shot First” campaign, or Alexandre O. Philippe’s documentary “The People vs. George Lucas,” which had its world premiere at SXSW this year).

According to reports, the new 3-D version of “Menace” could be ready to hit theaters in February of 2012.

Personally? I am sick of this. It’s almost inconceivable that Lucas could actually make me start hating Star Wars but he’s done it. The mess he made with the first three movies (or last three, depending on your preference) when he redid them was bad enough. But the last three (first three) just dragged the whole franchise down into a spoof of itself.

And for frells sake, Han shot first!!!

If it wasn’t filmed with 3D in mind it should not be shown in some sort of simulated 3D.

Why go through all the expense to convert these films to 3-D? I wish he’d make a new Star Wars movie instead. Or another Indiana Jones film.

The well of Lucas’s creativity has long since run dry. It’s obvious from the poor writing in the Prequels and Indy 4. As a middle aged man, he’s going back to suck on the teat of his youth, AGAIN.

I notice a major difference in attitudes, and its age related. I’m not going to see them. I loved the original three movies and thought they should have stopped. My kids and their friends are dying to see them in 3D.
Most of us that were around to see the originals at the movies are not going to see the 3D of them.

The only reason I will be seeing them is so that my son can see them on the Big Screen as I did when I was a child. I have been a fan of SW since the beginning(Pre Episode 4: New Hope) when it was just Star Wars. After they became multiple movies, I waited for what seemed like forever for the next 6 that were promised only to be disappointed in my adult years by the “1st” three.

I really do’t know if I can handle JarJar in 3D. Why has the NAACP never filed a complaint against Lucas?????

Well, I’m middle generation fan (which means that I first saw the SW classics on VHS before they were re-released in 1997), so while I don’t have any problems with the special edition, I won’t give another penny to Lucas in any way considering what he’s done to my favorite storyline of all times.

Besides, 3D is not all that popular now that we’ve had more than a taste of it; I guess he only wants to cash in that opportunity as well before it passes. Lame.

Personally, I still haven’t forgiven him for playing us fans for stupids when he advertised that the special edition was his ‘definite vision’ (hence a must-have despite its price), only to re-edit them again when he released them on DVD. No doubt, he will do that again in the 3D version, and not where he could ‘really’ fix his mess either, like by making it believable that Leia remembers her real mother, if only a little).

No thanks, not for me. Long live SWfanfiction where the fans truly keep the characters we love alive and faithful to themselves, and where Ani isn’t only a spoiled and whiny brat that doesn’t take no for an answer…

And no, before you ask, SW:CW doesn’t sate my SW appetite. The creators don’t really know that there is more to being a Jedi than flashy lightsaber works or else a few of their episodes would have been fixed five minutes after the main plot began…

Anyway, I’m not going to go watch the SW 3D at any time or in any format (big or small screen).

    End of rant…
