Reboot Rage: “TimeCop”

Reboot Rage: “TimeCop”

September 20, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 5 Comments

timecopRemember the Jean-Claude Van Damme movie, “TimeCop?”

Universal does.

Released in 1994, the film was a minor hit for the studio and one of the last hit theatrical releases for Van Damme. It did enough business to warrant a direct-to-video sequel without Van Damme and a spin-off tv series.

And apparently a decade and a half is long enough for the property to be ready for a reboot..

Universal is reportedly pursuing a new version of “Time Cop,” and one that could be ready for theaters in a relatively short window. The studio has reportedly been working on the new version for the past four years and it finally appears ready to hit the ground. A new version could be in theaters in the next 12-18 months.

According to What’s Playing, Van Damme would like to be back in the reboot, though Universal is interested in recasting his role.

I’d like to see a reboot… I loved the movie and enjoyed both the sequel and the TV Show.

I think they should recast Van Damme’s role, but give the guy a cameo. Maybe he could play in a flashback as a test pilot that became the bloodstain on the wall?

I liked the tv show well enough, but they definitely shouldn’t allow Van Damme back in the movie. His time (hah!) has passed.

I liked the original movie, didn’t have time to catch most of the series, although what I did see was entertaining, and didn’t even know there was a sequel.

But does it have to be remade? Not really. Could it be resurrected as a TV series again without the reboot/remake? Sure. You could even have Van Damme in a scene where there’s a little “reitrement celebration” going on, and be done with it.

Seriously, I have no interest in having every new movie that comes out be a remake of something I’ve already seen or own! And people wonder why I watch more TV than movies these days…

The original wasn’t a favorite of mine although it wasn’t bad…I might watch a reboot just to give it a fair chance if the reviews weren’t really bad…I wouldn’t want to see Van Damme in the lead though.
