Pixar Could Work on “Doctor Strange” Movie

September 20, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 2 Comments

As Marvel Studios begins to look to the post-“Avengers” superhero movies, one character who keeps coming up for a solo movie is Doctor Strange.

The studio has reportedly hired “Conan” screenwriters Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer for a script treatment and are looking to bring the character to the silver screen in the near future.

But a story from MTV News says that the film might not be live action, but instead could come from Disney’s Pixar Studios.

As you may know, Disney bought Marvel last year and could be part of the future plans to bring the Marvel heroes to the big-screen. And that includes Doctor Strange.

According to comic artist and writer Brendan McCarthy, both sides are open to the idea of Pixar developing the Doctor Strange movie.

In an interview with comics blog Bad Librarianship, McCarthy recalls a discussion he had about adapting Doctor Strange while in a meeting with Disney.

“I was over in Hollywood earlier this year mooching about, and I had a meeting at Disney and the conversation drifted around to Pixar animating a ‘Doctor Strange’ movie… Now, wouldn’t that be nice…”

There’s no official word from Marvel or Disney on this but given the nature of Doctor Strange, a Pixar animated movie wouldn’t necessarily be a bad idea.

I don’t know. Pixar is known for their fantastic original material. Doing an established character with so much history (baggage) could be lethal to their trach record. Sure the animation would look great, but who would write it?

Doctor Strange could be the perfect film for Pixar to start doing comic book movies with and hopefully the writing staff who gave us either the “Toy Story” trilogy or “The Incredibles” could be tapped for the script. Even with the baggage (canon) it has, it is not as well known as some of the other Marvel properties and it allows for a little leeway. It would be interesting who would direct the voice talent because that would also factor in as well. The trepidation felt by fans that this could be trashed is perfectly normal and I remember fans of something else feeling the same way in the summer of 2009. I would like to see what kind of treatment they give him and maybe they could also do “The Phantom” as well with Billy Zane either providing the voice or narration. I think Pixar has a lot of cred for forgiveness if it doesn’t quite measure up because we all know they’re eventually due for a letdown which if it happens here could be due to too much interference from Marvel.
