Braga Wanted to Kill Off “Seven of Nine”

Braga Wanted to Kill Off “Seven of Nine”

August 25, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

Many fans accused the later “Star Trek” entries of playing it too safe.

But if it had been up to producer and show runner Brannon Braga, he would have killed off one of the most popular characters from the run of “Star Trek: Voyager.” Braga tells SFX that he considered killing off Seven of Nine during the show’s run.

“It was my feeling that Seven Of Nine should have died. If you watch the episode ‘Human Error’ written by Andre Bormanis, it was not only a heart breaking episode in that Seven Of Nine learns, as she begins to explore her human emotions, that she can’t experience them. There’s a Borg chip inside her that will kill her if she tries to do so. First of all, that’s kind of an interesting ‘rape victim’ analogy or whatever you want to call it, about a damaged woman who can’t get past what happened to her, but I also always saw it as a crucial episode that would set up the finale,” he says.

“This was a woman who knew she was neither here nor there. She couldn’t go back to the Borg, nor would she want to, but she could never be fully human, so she was doomed. And I wanted to have her sacrifice herself to get her shipmates home.”

Yet one more reason i firmly believe that Brannon Braga was the worst thing ever for StarTrek. Thank God he has moved on to ruin other shows and legacies. Granted Gene Roddenberry set the bar high… but man Braga was/is just filled with bad ideas.

How was he the worst thing if ideas like this (which you apparently disagree with) weren’t integrated into the show? I actually would have liked having a somewhat main cast member die and it not be meaningless. Sacrificing herself for her crew mates would have been one of the most human things she could have done. I do agree that it would have to have been done the right way and not half-halfheartedly like most story lines on Voyager. It would have also required some…you know…acting on the part of Jeri Ryan.

At this point who cares what might have happened to any of the characters on Voyager? Right, no one does because Brannon Braga screwed the pooch on Voyager.

There was no real arc to the show and few of characters really changed in any significant or I should say interesting way. As Robert Beltran said when asked during the show’s run, if he liked the direction Voyager was going; he replied, “I’ll let you know when it starts going in a direction.”
