Eick “Confused” by “Caprica” Delay

August 16, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 10 Comments

When SyFy announced that the second half of “Caprica”‘s first season wouldn’t air until 2011, many of us were confused by the news (especially given that SyFy had previously announced the second half would air this summer).

Add to those confused, executive producer David Eick.

“I’ve never understood the network programming rationale,” Eick said. “I don’t know why they shut the show down for as long as they did before bringing it back.”

“I’m certain they know what they’re doing,” he added.

One of the reasons Eick is apparently disappointed is because he feels that the new episodes would surprise fans, explaining that the character of Lacy Rand (Magda Apanowicz) would go in a direction “that the audience is not expecting.”

“I don’t think anyone knows what she’s made of, and they’re about to find out in a huge way,” he said. The rest of the first season would be “intense,” “action-infused” and “suspenseful. It just slams into a new gear entirely.”

Simple, SyFy needs the room for Wrestling and great “made for tv” movies.

The young series was struggling but had it NOT been put on a year long hiatus, I think it was catching on. Putting the breaks on a show…especially a new show….in mid-season is basically the kiss of death. Way to kill a series SyFy! We can always count on you to disappoint.

SyFy initially started out as a great network….but that was a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away……………

Typically, SyFy only airs two (scripted) shows in the fall and this fall, it’ll be “Stargate Universe” and “Sanctuary”. So, there’s no room for “Caprica”. It makes perfect sense to me that they would air the second half in 2011, considering the channel’s typical scheduling.

And it’s not like something like this hasn’t happened before. Just look at “Eureka” Season 3. That season had a 10-month mid-season break. That’s almost a year! Waaaaay too long for a mid-season break.

I think it should be a rule. If there’s more than a 4 month break, it’s officially considered a new season…

I kind of feel like SYFY should take a hint from USA. If they want to do shorter seasons, do shorter seasons. Do not split up one season.

Take advantage of the summer. Give the writers 13 episodes instead of 22. Some of these shows could benefit from telling tighter stories, anyway. Or, better yet, have a altering spread of four or five shows that run 13 episode seasons.

I am kind of a fan of the 13 episode season. It at least works for Burn Notice, Royal Pains, Covert Affairs, and White Collar…yeah, USA has basically taken over my summer viewing schedule.

I agree that SyFy is a shell of its former self. However, I add, that anyone who doesn’t like it, ought to get together, and start their own network, and do it right.

Jay, what do you think I’ve been itching to do since around the time Scifi Channel chose to do 3 years of First Wave over 1 year of Babylon 5? 🙂

Alas, I do not have the fundraising genius that John Hendricks did, so I need a better plan.

Are you saying we have no right to complain? Some of us do not have the money to start our own station lol.

So, Caprica returns for season 1.5 in January, four and a half months from now. Not too bad. When would Moore, Eick et al start writing episodes for season 2? Have they already started?

Really looking forward to season 1.5 and judging by the trailer, it is going to be amazing. New Cap city, v-world cylons, centurions, head characters, religious fanatics, the colonies, the Daniel Graystone and Joseph Adama now equal in their loss, and forced to work together. I love the possibility that New Cap City and the rest of the v-world will either survive the fall of Caprica, and in a ghostly way continue to exist, even when humanity has fled onboard the Galactica in search of Earth, or continues to exist in a sedate and refined form as the world we get to glimpse in the cylon projection. Is that a half truth that Leoben told Roslin, when he said that Adama was a cylon? He was really talking about Tamra Adama.
I think despite Eike and Moore’s attempt to establish Caprica as a related but separate creature, I think Caprica will do best if it delves into the whole BSG mythology surrounding Kobol, the head characters, the gods, New Cap City, and cylon projection. It needs to embrace its BSG roots. It needs to embrace the darkness. It need All Along the Watchtower as the intro music. Not only would this help reinforce its BSG roots, but it would offer the audience carried over from BSG, the promise or the possibility that the mystery surrounding Kara Thrace would be answered.
Listening to Bear McCreary’s ‘Caprica City: Before the Fall’, and it’s sending shivers down me. The BSG universe that Eike and Moore created, like McCreary’s music is sublime.
