Grade “Haven”

Grade “Haven”

August 8, 2010 By News Droid 12 Comments

“Haven,” the creepy new X-Files-esque show on the SyFy Channel, has had several weeks to prove it either has IT or doesn’t. Time for viewers to get their say on the subject.

This show SUCKS! The acting is horrible, the lines are cheesy, the characters are paper thin, and the plots don’t even seem to go anywhere. I can’t believe they canceled The Dresden Files, but they are keeping this horrible show on the air. I’ve removed it from my DVR schedules and will not view it. This show needs to be canceled. It is everything that is wrong with the SyFy channel right now.

Voted C for now. It reminds us of so many shows. It’s got a little X-Files, a little Twin Peaks, even a little Warehouse 13 though the problems aren’t caused by objects but people.

It’s quirky enough to keep us interested so we will keep watching to see how it goes.

After watching several episodes, “Haven” feels to me like Stephanie Meyers writing “The X-Files”.

Kind of a modern Twilight Zone. Odd things but no explanation for them – which is one of the reasons I always liked the Zone.

It could improve but the ideas have been pretty unique so far. My favorite was the one with the music. When he played his music, it made sane people crazy and crazy people sane.

I enjoy the humor in the show and I like the uniqueness of the special powers. However, I would like to see more out of the overarching story. It’s moving a little slowly and the “freak-of-the-week” thing is starting to wear a little thin, but I’m willing give it more time to impress me.

I think it’s pretty solid. The characters are likable and the actors playing Audrey, Nathan, and Duke have chemistry and seem to work well together.

I do agree with AndyMac that it seems like a formula show(at least on the surface)….of course that could change…the underlying storyline about Lucy and the back story that has yet to be told about the troubles (and even the reason for the bad blood between Nathan and Duke) seem to be ideas that could be built on to take the show down a much less formulaic path.

Also like the unique characters in the town…they seem quaint and exactly like those you’d expect from a King novel. Gave it a solid B for now….interesting enough show but with some room for improvement.

I gave it a B. Stephen King adaptations definitely work better in the long form, and they’ve produced some entertaining episodes while they’re finding their feet. It’s sort of a cross between The X-Files‘s ongoing buddy cop relationship and The Outer Limits‘s weird-thing-of-the-week. Plus, I’ve always liked Eric Balfour and Nicholas Campbell.

I’m probably a little biased since half my family’s from coastal Maine, and the show’s really captured the quirky Downeaster spirit. 🙂

I’m enjoying it alot. I am patiently waiting for the pay-off as to what is behind the strangeness. If you have read “American Gods” by Neil Gaiman you might know what I think it might be.

I honestly gave this one a chance, but I just dropped it. I really, really want this one to work. I loved the Colorado Kid and thought it was quirky enough that, in the right hands, it could have been a fun show. I don’t think the right hands have this. I’ve been disappointed in every story after the pilot episode.

I’ll definitely keep my ears open and if folks start praising the show up and down, I’ll give it a second shot. It’s been enough episodes where I don’t think it’s going to go the way of Fringe, Warehouse 13, or Stargate U, that started off a little weak and rolled into awesomeness.

After watching 3 episodes I dropped it from my DVR. It wants to be interesting, but it lacks in depth or … an interesting storyline. Maybe it’ll get interesting by the end of the season, I drag myself through the eps and I’ll catch up. So I’ll listen to the show to see what people are thinking, but I’m done for now. I was actually bored.

I gave it a C, would have added a “minus” if I could have. I like the idea, but find the execution lacking. I don’t blame the actors. I blame the writers and the directors. The pilot just flat out sucked. The story lurched around to much for me. Mostly too slow with these improbable leaps to move the plot somewhere. I am hanging in there for now but if the stories don’t become more interesting, I won’t keep watching. There just isn’t any “spark” to it. While the Gates is bit too Desperate Housewives with fangs for me, it is a much better executed show and has a very similar premise.

I think the actors would do better with better material to work with. I think it could be saved but doubt that SyFy will make the effort.

SyFy seem to be struggling with finding a quality and guiding creative vision for their network. Painkiller Jane was fun at first and then yuck! What a sad end for that series. I agree with the comment about the Dresden Files, a good show that was just dropped. I am hoping that they will give Caprica a chance. It is very good. Morally complicated, fun, good acting and a well developed vision of its world. I am concerned that they are going to ruin Being Human, a truly wonderful British show.

Haven is a lot like SyFy Channel these days, not very original and kind of blundering around with just enough to keep us hoping that better things are on the way.

OK. First season is over and HOLY COW did that come together spectacularly well. I was totally in agreement with the ‘meh’ kinda appraisal. It was okay. It did not trip me up into not watching but it also never caught fire. Until the last three episode where it went insanely cool. A properly executed game changer. I *was* just kinda watching out of habit (it showed up in the Hulu queue) but it was a show that I ‘got to’. I was seriously thinking of dropping it between seasons. Not thinking of that now.

Hope you guys watched it (or catch up) ’cause that was sweet!
