“Star Wars” TV Show Postponed

August 5, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 13 Comments

Remember all those stories about the live-action “Star Wars” TV series that would take place between “Sith” and “A New Hope?”

Well, it apparently isn’t happening anymore.

George Lucas told an audience gathered to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “The Empire Strikes Back” the news.   Lucas says it’s not a lack of scripts (Lucas said he wants 100 episodes of the show), but a lack of money.

“The live action TV show is kind of on hold because we have scripts, but we don’t know how to do ’em. Because, they literally are Star Wars, only we’re going to have to try to do them a tenth the cost,” he said. “And, it’s a huge challenge … lot bigger than what we thought it was gonna be.”

Hasn’t this been postponed continually over the last couple of years? I already gave up hope of seeing this come to light like maybe two years ago. If it’s not coming within two years of the initial announcement, then it’s probably not coming at all.

I don’t understand how someone can be surprised that a space-sci-fi tv show costs money…

Lack of money??? How many billions of $$$ has Lucas raked in on this franchise over the years??

I agree with Jonathan… Make the final 3 films instead.

Hey George, I know how you can raise the money.

    Star Wars in 3D.

Why make something new when you can just keep selling the same stuff over and over again.

    Hmm…
It’s to expensive to do a Star Wars series but…
There were how many Star Trek based series after the movies, four?
I wonder how they could afford to do those then.
Maybe Lucas is thinking more about the special effects and cost because there is no substance to the story to keep it aloft.

@Jon, shows like Star Trek and even BSG have stories where they get to reuse the same sets and costumes from week to week. In his podcasts, Ron Moore always spoke about how they wanted to do certain episodes of BSG but couldn’t due to costs. That’s why we occasionally get a “stuck in an elevator” episode or a “hey the forest on this planet looks familiar!”

Lucas is a psychopath who probably wants his shows to look like the movies with all the planet-hopping, crazy aliens, thousands of characters and overblown space battles.

If it is indeed too expensive, then they should just animate it like the current series, but give it a distinctly different style.

How about we just say enough already. He already took a giant dump on my childhood memories of The Original Trilogy.

Just go spend your zillions, George. We won’t mind.
