What’s Ahead for “Futurama”?

July 27, 2010 By Mike Hickerson Leave a Comment

We’re only six episodes into the new run of “Futurama” on Comedy Central an , for the most part, it’s been a return to form of one of the funniest animated series ever created.

But what’s ahead for the rest of the season?

The producers dropped a few hints at the recent San Diego Comic Con.

First up is this week’s episode, which producers David X. Cohen and Matt Groening say is one of the favorite episodes they’ve done in the new run and the entire series run. The episode involves a forward-only time machine that will fling the Professor and Fry into the far future. It was also see the return of the Leela and Fry relationship.

However, Cohen warns that while we’ll get some more about the romance between Fry and Leela here, the creative team is saving some things for the second-to-last episode of the season as well.

Also coming up is the series’ 100th episode featuring the voices of Devo. The final episode of the season will be another installment in the “Anthology of Interest” series. And we’ll see a show about the characters switching bodies requires the Professor and the Harlem Globetrotters to devise a mathematical theorem that will be left unfinished on a blackboard in the episode, as the ultimate test for the show’s nerdiest fans.

As for what the future holds beyond this run of 26 episodes (which are being split into two thirteen episode chunks on Comedy Central), Cohen says Comedy Central is pleased with the ratings and response but there haven’t been any discussions of the long-term future of the show or a renewal for another season.
