What’s New With “Batman 3”?

July 22, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

Now that Christopher Nolan has finished work on “Inception,” he can now turn his full attention to the next Batman installment. And that means one thing–villain rumors.

Since “The Dark Knight” ended, rumors have persisted that the third installment would see Batman taking on the Riddler in the next movie. Those rumors are picking up some steam now and some in Hollywood are saying that Nolan would like to see actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the role. Gordon-Levitt is currently part of the cast of Nolan’s “Inception.”

The actor hasn’t officially been offered the role nor has he accepted it. That’s, of course, assuming that the Riddler is the bad guy for the next movie.

No matter who the villain is for the next Batman, it’s looking more and more like the next installment will be filmed entirely using IMAX cameras.

Nolan wanted to use the IMAX technology to make inception but eventually decided against it after lengthy conversations with his director of photography Wally Pfister. Pfister said that some of the sequences Nolan envisioned would use hand-held cameras and that the IMAX technology wouldn’t support that vision.

“Finally I had to tell Chris that the way he was describing the film, so much of it wanted to be with a handheld camera and kind of running around,” Pfister told MTV News. “That’s just not physically possible with the IMAX camera. We ruled out shooting in IMAX.”

However, Pfister did say that he would prefer that the next “Batman” be filmed using all IMAX cameras. Several key sequences in “The Dark Knight” were filmed using the technology.

“I can’t say until I read the script, but it would certainly be my preferred, amazing goal to shoot the whole movie in IMAX,” Pfister said.

The Riddler? *sigh* Even in ‘The Batman’ it was a corny character. If they want to take it up a notch, try Azreal pre-conversion. Heck, take a risk and do Deathstroke. I’ll still see it because I trust Nolan, but Batman’s rogue’s galley is pretty pathetic and weak after The Joker.

Nolan has this thing for getting Levitt in the next Batman feature. Originally Levitt was due to reprise the Joker for #3, but that has been scraped.

I have nothing against Levitt, mind you, he is an excellent actor and choice for any role, be it hero or villain, and his performance for Inception was stunning.

If any of these rumors turn out to be solid then I would greatly welcome seeing Levitt onboard as the Riddler, or any other villain Nolan may be considering for Batman 3.

If there’s going to be a Riddler, at least make it Christopher Eccleston… If Levitt is the Riddler, I hope he does a great job–that way, I can justify that IMAX ticket. 🙂

I’d love to see an Animated Series villain crossover. The Phantasm would work awesomely. Temple Fugate would be something to play with, too, though he’s in the comics as well. I’d even settle for a Poison Ivy again, since they slaughtered her character in the first go round in the movies.
