Space1999_S1_BLU_eFollowing the success of remastering and releasing “The Prisoner” on Blu-Ray, A&E Home Entertainment has announced that “Space 1999” will get similar treatment later this year.

The popular genre series, starring Barbara Bain and Martin Landau, will hit Blu-Ray later this year. The episodes will be “complete, restored and uncut” according to TV Shows on DVD. The first season will be released as a six disc Blu-Ray box set.

No word yet on a release date, but the retail price for the set will be $99.95. You can pre-order a set on Amazon.

Oh great, I can’t wait to see those pullover shirts with the zipper that ran up the sleeve to the neck, again. Like that ever made sense; or the fact half the cast disappeared after the first season to be replaced by people we hadn’t seen before.

What’s really funny is the suggestion I have read a third season of Space 1999 was sacrificed by Sir Lew Grade to use funds earmarked for that purpose for the advertising budget of Raise the Titanic instead. One type of mediocrity replaced by a different type of mediocrity, how apropos

OK I will admit the Eagles looked cool.

Well worth seeing in HD. The first season was the cerebral one, and Year 2 was made to be more like Star Trek, so it lost some originality. Even as a 70s show it’s far above most sci fi made today, and its production values are very high. Special FX hold up well even by today’s standards. They spent $275,000 per episode, the equivalent today of millions on each show. Very thought provoking writing and ahead of its time in many ways.

Thanks for posting the article Brett. An interesting idea but I doubt it will ever come to fruition.
