Shyamalan Talks “Airbender” DVD

July 8, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 8 Comments

If you walked out of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” wanting a longer cut of the film, you won’t be getting it. Director M. Night Shyamalan says that all his movies are “director’s cut” when they’re released to theaters and he has no plans to go back and extend “Airbender” when it hits DVD.

However, the director does plan to include several deleted scenes from the film on the disc.

“I do want to show some of the scenes I cut out,” he explained. “I probably won’t show the Kyoshi Warriors because I want to save them for the second movie, because I’m going to have to introduce them all over again.”

“There are a lot of scenes I took out that I want to show you,” he added.

While he wouldn’t go into too many specifics, Shyamalan hinted that some of the more comedic elements of the project should make the cut for the DVD’s bonus features, especially after he spent so much time cutting them out the film.

“Actually, some [scenes] that were a little too comic, they’re in the DVD,” he said.

MNS is awfully optimistic that if there is a second film he will direct it. I have not seen this but a 6% on rottentomatoes.com is not encouraging.

One week after release and it’s a 4.4/10 on IMDb.com. My threshold of pain averages a 5.5 to 6.0.

It goes without saying that I will skip this, even on network television.

I just saw it last night and it’s a good film. I am not sure why people are all over this film so harshly. Dinocroc vs. Supergator is rightfully a 4.0 on IMDB. The Last Airbender is so far above and beyond it is silly to even mention them in the same stupid internet post. Airbender looks great, effects are good, the mythology is good, and the film is engaging. Go see it for yourself and you will be asking how in the world people are rating this good movie like it was SyFy original movie. Crazy.

I couldn’t disagree more and the reasons being the acting is simply atrocious, the effects mediocre at best, the changes in races and names, and so much more. Go read Roger Ebert’s review; it sums up my opinion well. This is the worst scifi movie I’ve seen in theaters in years. I almost walked out!

I must just live on a different planet. First off if you too this film as a Science Fiction film I think the conversation is over because it was a fantasty film. There was no science fiction in it. Still I can name 10 worst science fiction films I have seen in the theater in the past few years. Worse stories, worse acting, worse effects. Jumper for instance and that is sitting at a 5.9 on IMDB, Push 6.0, G.I Joe for the good lords sake is at 5.8, Transformers 2 is at 6.0. Really the list goes on but I am boring myself. The bottom line is in my opinion Airbender is a better overall movie by far then the others listed. Easily. On my planet. But it sits at 4.4. I should say I saw it in 2D. I avoid 3D because I do not enjoy it. Maybe this helped my enjoyment some who knows. I still feel the film looked pretty beautiful. I loved what Andrew Lesnie did with the LotR’s movies and I think he did it again with Airbender. I don’t know. I must be missing something. I do not understand.

Please spare us. Unfortunately, the theater was full were I saw this mess, (It was a group decision, I wouldn’t have gone on my own.) and it pulled down 40 + million over the weekend. Shamalama Ding Dong has a hit on his hands so Hollywood will likely give him his sequel.

Here’s hoping Aang actually has some fun and Appa licks someone.

movie wasnt THAT bad. its wasnt award winning by any means, but it was a kids film. i agree that the script was terrible, but i do want to give the young actors kudos, because i think they did an alright job considering the trash they were given to work with. but the film is entertaining enough and a good length. though i think a directors cut with all those extra scenes added in would be a must if he wants fans to actually go see the second film with his precious Kyoshi warriors in it.
