Depp as the Doctor?!?

Depp as the Doctor?!?

July 1, 2010 By Michael Hickerson 11 Comments

Hold on to your sonic screwdrivers.

SciFi Wire is reporting that Oscar-nominee Johnny Depp is in conversations about playing the Doctor on the big-screen.

I’ll wait while that bombshell sinks in….

According to SciFi Wire, the original story came from Tor.com and discussed that producer Russell T. Davies left the show last year and moved to America to help bring the Doctor to the big-screen. And while the report has since been removed by Tor and could all just be a rumor, there were other Hollywood sources who said that it was true and that Depp could play our favorite Time Lord as early as 2012.

Of course, this assumes a lot since Depp’s schedule is fairly full for the next few months.

But would Depp be a good choice as the Doctor?

Depp might possibly be a good Doctor… he’s can play the eccentric character well enough. But it wouldn’t make sense – doesn’t the Doctor always regenerate younger? How would that work? Depp is decades older than Smith. That and.. 2012 is too soon for a new Doctor. I’d certainly like more than 3 seasons of the Matt Smith era. 🙁

I think the big-screen version would be a separate entity, not tied to the series.

Hence how you could have Depp as the Doctor.

There’ve been non-canonical Doctor Who movies before (Peter Cushing), so why not? Just put a little disclaimer on the poster and apart from the idiots who always ignore warnings (see: the people who took small children to see Watchmen, or Heavy Metal, or the South Park movie) everything should be cool.

Meh. I usually don’t care too much about such things, but for me, Doctor Who is quintessentially British in tone and flavor. While Depp has range, I’d much rather have a British actor (or actress) in the role. It’s not just about the accent, it’s the little things.

At least for americans, the actors playing the doctor have been relative unknowns, which i think is very important. Depp is almost *too* charismatic.

The accent is not a big deal . . . it might even make it easier to understand the dialogue, although if it is Depp, it might not be much of a help.

Besides, we’re not Depp fans, so it’s a determent as far as us eventually watching a full length movie with him as the Doctor.

    And…. breathe.

The BBC says there’s no Doctor Who movie in the works. Not even with Johnny Depp.

This “report” has been circulating for over a year, the original site that posted it later retracted it, but it keeps getting reposted as though it’s legit. It’s not. It’s a fake.

Hypothetically, I think that if there were a Doctor Who movie, Depp might not be the best choice. He has way too much sex appeal (and he’s not British.) The Doctor’s world is a brilliant world. Bringing in an uber-sexy American male lead is going to distract people from the content that true fans love.

    @Michael Falkner.

Thanks. That’s a relief. No more RTD please for the love of GOD.

Matt Smith is great as the Doctor and I’m actually enjoying Dr. Who again since Davies left.

After seeing a lot of Matt Smith in the episode The Lodger , I think he has plenty of sex appeal himself, he definitely keeps himself in shape.
