Wonder Woman Gets New Costume

Wonder Woman Gets New Costume

June 30, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 8 Comments

wonderwoman_newTo help reflect a new, more modern Wonder Woman, complete with a tweak to her origin story, the Amazon princess is getting a new costume.

The costume was designed by Jim Lee, one of the top comic artists in the industry who was also named co-publisher of DC Comics earlier this year. The new storyline comes from comic book writer J. Michael Straczynski and artist Don Kramer.

“She’s been locked into pretty much the exact same outfit since her debut in 1941,” Straczynski told the New York Times. “If you’re going to make a statement about bringing Wonder Woman into the 21st century, you need to be bold and you need to make it visual. I wanted to toughen her up, and give her a modern sensibility.”

Straczynski added “What woman only wears only one outfit for 60-plus years?”

The report also notes that one of the tenants for the new costume was to make it more contemporary and something that would be potentially better suited for an “international film franchise.”

“The original costume was the American flag brought to life,” said Lee. “This one is a little more universal.”

In the new direction devised by Straczynski, unknown forces have changed history and destroyed Wonder Woman’s mystical island home in the past. Now, Diana was raised in the outside world by a few of the surviving Amazons, giving her greater ties to both worlds. She is also less powerful than before, but may regain her previous abilities as the series progresses.

Overall, not bad. But the little jacket is so 80’s.

If there’s any comic character that needed a new costume it’s Woner Woman. Her old outfit doesn’t cut it anymore.

Yeah, let’s be ashamed that her costume was TOO much American Flag in your face. That is the whole point of the comic as with most of the comics of the day. Good vs Evil, America was the good, even if not true. That is what made these great- In your face Patriotism. If you do not like it that is fine. If you like it so much but you want to redo it then why buy it at all, make your own and do not just use the name. I do not get it. In this picture it lookslike a female Spider Woman more than Wonder Woman. OK to update the outfit a little but not this. This is spandex gone wild. It may look better in real life I hope. So far not a fan.

Seems to me that it’s about time they put the women in something that was more *realistic* for a superhero.
The guys aren’t all running around in bikinis.
Who’s supposed to do some serious fighting in a frackin’ *bikini*, or something that looks like a bondage stripper would wear?
And I see that she’s not wearing high heels either.
This Wonder Woman looks like she really *could* kick your ass.
    And you’d love it.

This won’t last. Every time they’ve changed an iconic character’s costume (or powers, or origin, or identity), it creates hype, then fuss, then increased comic sales, then they go back to the original. It’s been done with Superman, Spider-man, Batman, Thor, Green Lantern, and YES, even Wonder Woman (way back in the 70’s).

Diana was shopping in a secondhand store and found a jacket the Black Canary tossed out in the 70’s.
