The reboot of “The Karate Kid” proved to be bigger than the reboot of “The A Team” at the box office this weekend. The remake of the popular 80’s movie took in $56 million and earned the top spot at the box office.
“The A Team” finished second with $26 million.
The one-two punch of “Karate” and “Team” was enough to knock the fourth “Shrek” movie from the top spot. It took third with $15.8 million.
Rounding out the top five were the comedy “Get Him to the Greek” and “The Killers.”

My wife and I went to see “Karate Kid” this weekend and it was actually really good. In my opinion, it has parallels with the 1984 classic, but they’re not really that comparable.
I don’t know the last time I heard an audience cheer like a movie was a sporting event. The film even got a solid round of applause at the end.
It was a good time.

Took my nieces and nephews to see KK this weekend. It’s a surprisingly endearing and good movie. It’s for the tween crowd, so old farts like me aren’t in this market. However, what I can say really put a smile on my face was seeing all the 10-12 yr olds jumping up and cheering at the end. It really brought me back to when I first saw the original KK and the tween crowd doing the EXACT same thing. Some messages are just universal, and this one takes the right notes to make it relevant in 2010. It’s not MY KK, but it’s the KK my kids will love and I’m okay with that. Jayden Smith is a pretty decent actor. He doesn’t try to get you to “like” him like some movie family royalty kids. He just has his own look and quirkiness that works. However, there were some moments where it was scary how much he looked like his dad.
Michael Falkner says
@KG: I thought it was also scary how much he acted like his dad. There were points where Jayden sounded just like him.

Will this reboot create a renewed interest in Karate or Kung-Fu like the original?

I opted for A-Team over KK this weekend, and that movie didn’t disappoint either. We only paid matinée prices but our whole group (wife and another couple) left the theater feeling that it would have been worth full price. Stay for a extra treat past the credits.
Michael Falkner says
@Dave: I know the local theater here in the Atlanta area was handing out postcard adverts for a couple of local martial arts studios when you bought the tickets. The ads were for special pricing on lessons for kids. We handed ours back since we don’t have kids to take advantage of the special.
I don’t know that the film will push interest, but some people are certainly taking advantage of the publicity.

Not sure if that will happen, but I do know that my kids, both already in Tae Kwon Do, are itching to see this!
