ABC Won’t Rescue “Ghost Whisperer”

ABC Won’t Rescue “Ghost Whisperer”

June 4, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 8 Comments

After being given a pink slip earlier this year by CBS, fans held out hope that ABC might grant a new season to “The Ghost Whisperer.”

According to EW, ABC has now passed on the series.

Reports indicate that the price tag was too high for ABC to pick-up the canceled series featuring Jennifer Love Hewitt.

The alphabet network also passed on a picking up another CBS castaway, “The New Adventures of Old Christine.”

No word yet on if “Whisperer” may try to move to cable for a new season.

Please can some station, any station pick up Ghost Whisperer? I’m in shock and mourning since they canceled it. I looked foward all week to watch my favorite show on Friday night, and now it isn’t on. I don’t know what CBS was thinking. But I know one thing, I will never watch CBS again!!!!

I’m with you, Debbie. I keep looking every other day to see if another network might pick it up. Ghost Whisperer consistently won its tough Friday night time slot so I was surprised CBS cancelled it. Statements by CBS regarding the cancellation were weird, too. Nina Somebody from CBS said something like: “Some shows no matter how popular just need to end.” (?) It’s like there was bad blood between CBS execs and GW producers. I sensed that CBS would play hardball with ABC regarding the pick up price, too. Reading between the lines of CBS statements, it sounded like they just wanted GW dead and didn’t want to look stupid if it was a success for ABC which it almost certainly would have been. Hope someone saves the show. It was different and fun.

Ratings-wise, CBS is a solid position right now with a number of shows that perform well in the ratings and are economically feasible to support.

That creates a situation where they can be a bit more choosy about returning shows and look at whether or not picking up a longer-running show is the most viable alternative. In the case of shows like GW or Numbers, it becomes a theory of diminishing returns. The price tag is going up as it does for all long-running series and while it may deliver a certain set of ratings, it may not be worth the investment or that CBS will make less profit by continuing the series. It’s why certain shows that are solid performers that would be huge hits for other networks are being given the axe.

CBS is having its cake and eating it too….and while it’s a shame that GW suffers by getting canceled, it’s the reality of the network it’s on.

Regarding what Michael H. says, I get all that but still think CBS made a big mistake. Their new fall line-up is something out of the 70’s: Blue Bloods (looks like Law and Order meets Dynasty), Hawaii Five-0 (“Book ’em, Danno!” Seriously?), The Defenders (wasn’t this also a 70’s TV show?), Mike and Molly (looks like King of Queens meets Cathy–you know, from the 70’s comic strip). I never watched much CBS, but I know my mother (age 79) does. She likes Survivor and Amazing Race. The only CBS shows we watch (family of four w/2 teenage boys) are BBT and HINYM. GW and Medium are guilty pleasures I DVR’ed. Medium is more serious and thought provoking (LOVED the recent show where the oldest daughter kept jumping ahead in time). GW was different because it wasn’t a drama or a sit-com. It was escapist and fun. Guess I just want something DIFFERENT to look forward to next fall.

I am madder then hell! I love the story line and Melinda and Jim’s romance was my all time favorite. I can’t believe no one will pick it up, every one wants to make money off of the reruns… Lifetime, We, sifi, Ion, but no one wants to save the story line… incredibly disappointed.
