Internet Retailer Makes Costly Mistake

Internet Retailer Makes Costly Mistake

May 24, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

If you were shopping on 6pm.com Friday, you may picked up some bargains.

The site experienced a software glitch that priced all of its inventory at $49.98. That included items that retails for significantly more, according to TG Daily. The glitch was noticed by the company and the site was shut down while the regular pricing was restored, but not before it cost the company $1.6 million.

The site said that it wouldn’t punish customers for taking advantage of the glitch and would honor all the sales made while the pricing structure was on-line.

“When we figured out the mistake was happening, we had to shut down the site for a bit until we got the pricing problem fixed,” says Aaron Magness, director of brand marketing and business development for parent company Zappos Development.

“While we’re sure this was a great deal for customers, it was inadvertent, and we took a big loss (over $1.6 million – ouch) selling so many items so far under cost.”

The error only applied to products which were for sale on 6pm.com but not on sister site Zappos.com – although, Magness says, this applies to the vast majority of products on 6pm.com.

“However, it was our mistake. We will be honoring all purchases that took place on 6pm.com during our mess up,” he says. “We apologize to anyone that was confused and/or frustrated during out little hiccup, and thank you all for being such great customers.”

The window of opportunity lasted from midnight to 6am PST, bringing new meaning to the company’s motto of ‘Shop. Save. Smile.’

Magness adds: “Let’s just say this was not a boring weekend for us.”

How can you write an article like this and not mention the name of the retailor? Why even bother with the article? This is gossip, not news.

The first line of the story mentions the site in question…..

The retailer *was* mentioned. I’ll make it easier for you.

I have to admit the first time I read it I missed it too. At first glance it looks like it says “if you were shopping at 6pm” as in the actual time Friday… and I was like shopping at 6pm *where*??
