“Iron Man 2” Reviews Begin

April 27, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 11 Comments

The early reviews for “Iron Man 2” have begun.  And so far, the opinions seem fairly mixed.

First up is the review from the Hollywood Reporter.

Bottom Line: Now he’s the Tin Man.
Well, that didn’t take long. Everything fun and terrific about “Iron Man,” a mere two years ago, has vanished with its sequel. In its place, “Iron Man 2” has substituted noise, confusion, multiple villains, irrelevant stunts and misguided story lines. A film series that started out with critical and commercial success will have to settle for only the latter with this sequel. Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Tony Stark/Iron Man will assure that.

You can read the rest of the review (which does have SPOILERS) HERE.

Variety is a bit kinder.

“Iron Man 2” isn’t as much fun as its predecessor, but by the time the smoke clears, it’ll do. Much like “The Dark Knight,” this Paramount release brings an enormous stash of goodwill to the party, thanks to a well-crafted origin tale whose popularity fueled anticipation for a follow-up. Yet while the first go-round for this lesser-known Marvel hero benefited from its freshness and visual flair, the beats here are more familiar, the pacing more uneven. Given the demand, though, that will hardly matter, and this armored adventure promises to be a money-making machine that clicks on all cylinders.

You can read the full review HERE. (And yes, it does contain SPOILERS)

“Iron Man 2” opens Friday, May 7.

I just knew thay were gonna mess this one up. I had high hopes for this. Oh well I hope that this does not mess up the franchise!

Considering how good the first one was, I always felt that trying to copy or even surpass it was unrealistic. Hopefully Favreau and crew just stuck to trying to make a fun and not try to one-up themselves. That way lies madness. Just ask any sucessful band whose follow up to their most popular album sucked. Some of them just wind up being one hit album wonders, others take the hint.

My concern has always been that they would do the Spiderman blunder and overload it with too many villains and not enough character development.
I feel that they have also pushed far too much into the “oh shiny” special effects, and the story is going to suffer.
Time will tell… This week we get our chance to make up our minds on how they did.

I saw it on Thursday – yes, it opened this week in Europe – and I have to say, I completely and utterly disagree with the “official” reviews. I thought it was better than the first movie.

You can read my review on my blog, or a distilled version on the Farpoint Forums…

All I can say is that I’m crazy excited about seeing this. There isn’t a critic on this planet that would keep me away unless they use an unnecessary amount of physical force, or throw Bridget Regan in my path. I think we’re in for a fun ride.

It was okay, wasn’t as good as the first one. Actually the villian was just like the first one if you think about it. Was some funny moments to it, here and there. But over all it was meh.

I think the reviews are crap! Iron Man 2 was better than the first one. It had plenty of character development (and not just for Tony), more S.H.I.E.L.D. involvement, good pacing, great humor, hard-hitting, but not overblown action. You couldn’t ask for a better sequel.

I was blown away by this movie. The characterization was amazing, *Minor spoilers* I found the most interesting stuff was when Tony wasn’t in the armor and struggling with his choices and coming to grips, poorly, with the crushing weight of legacy, responsibility, mortality and while it didn’t quite delve into the beloved Demon in A Bottle storyline you can see the path. Tony is a deeply flawed human being and while he’s never learned the Peter Parker mantra with great power comes great resposibility we do learn through Tony that with great power comes the ability to do great harm.

I liked this one even better than the first. Really don’t understand the Iron Man 2 hate.

I agree in a lot of ways I preffered this film, I found the action better. But it was also bogged down with uneccesary bits, I didn’t like the way it was a backstory film for the Avengers.
I wrote what i liked and dislkiked in the form of a parody script. I hope it makes people laugh.
