Third Nolan “Batman” Won’t Be In 3-D

April 23, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 10 Comments

With a lot of third installments in movie franchises rushing to jump on the 3-D bandwagon, it’s nice to hear that at least one third movie won’t be resorting to the 3-D gimmick.

According to cinematographer Wally Pfister, who worked on Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight,” Nolan isn’t in any hurry to embrace 3-D.  And that extends to the third Batman installment which is due in 2012.

Pfister says that he and  Nolan are ‘devotees’ of film and they have a shared “disinterest” in 3-D.

He then went on to call 3D a distraction that’s “great for like amusement park rides like the ‘Honey I Shrunk The Kids’ ride at Disneyland,” and said that the “fad might pass by the time that summer comes around.”

That doesn’t mean Nolan won’t be embracing new technological advances for the next film.  Nolan has said he’d like to film the entire third Batman installment using IMAX equipment.  Nolan filmed several key sequences of “The Dark Knight” using IMAX and was pleased with the results.

At last someone gets it. 3D doesn;t make bad movies better, characters, plot pacing, writing, etc. make great movies.

No, 3D is not bad. Sometimes it enhances the film like Avatar and Up as two examples. However, it seems the studios seem to think that all movies become better with 3D. If you have an average or bad movie, it does not all of a sudden become great because it is in 3D.

But they could have called it Batman 3 D.

I agree with Knighthawk617 it takes good writing, Plot and character development to make a good movie and the 3D is just something that should be used every now on a select films and not on every film like they are trying to do now. I think the only reason they are doing it now is that they charge more for the tickets at the Cinemas.

Who cares, he should be MORE concerned with his flick actually being GOOD. 3D works in MANY cases, and would have been cool for this flick, BUT that’s not a deal breaker. After Dark Knight, I’m just hoping I can get a movie as good as his first one.

Nolan – concentrate on the film, I don’t cae about your opinion on 3D. Thanks.

It’s not that studios think movies are better in 3-D.. they just like the price difference in ticket sales to inflate their numbers.

KG, are you saying you did not like Dark Knight? I’ll give you that it was about 2 action sequences too long, and as always, never kill a villian, especially one you haven’t had a good chance to develop yet…but Dark Knight was exceptional in my opinion. I guess we’re all entitled to our own, you just surprised me. I hadn’t met anyone who didn’t like Dark Knight.

BMid… NO NO NO NO I LOVED Dark Knight!!! What I’m saying is that Dark Knight was probably one of the single greatest comic movies ever. Thus, instead of worrying about 3D, as a fan, I want him to worry about showing me a story AS compelling as Dark Knight… or at least as good as Batman Begins.

Oh man, stirrings of another Nolan Batman movie, excited and nervous. Batman Begins the most compelling story of all the Batman movies (IMO) and it was an origin which usually are dull if you already know the story. Dark Knight was almost as good, I loved them both but I hope they do some more of showing Batman from the criminal’s perspective like they did in BB. Oh and something something something 3D something something don’t care. Maybe also a little less meta philosophical discussions on vigilantism and more having to be ultra clever to overcome challenges. DK had that, I just want MORE. Oh, and they should have the Original Batman, Luis Wilson, make a cameo! But that would make it a zombie flick wouldn’t it?
