If you’ve been chomping at the bit to own the “Star Wars” saga on Blu Ray, the good news is LucasFilm is talking about their release.
The bad news is that LucasFilm hasn’t yet given fans a timetable on when the films will be released on Blu Ray.
At this weekend’s C2E2 convention, LucasFilm representatives said that the films are being readied for Blu Ray release and that they would include a “wealth” of extras and special features for fans. No word yet on if the Blu Rays might include the original and special editions of the classic trilogy or if LucasFilm might do a restoration on the original trilogy.
Lucasfilm Director of Fan Relations Steve Sansweet says “it won’t be in the too distant future.” IGN Blu-Ray quotes Sansweet as touting the set as being “a very full set … with lots of extra material” including “real treasures” like “all kinds of scenes from dailies that have never been seen before.”
Sansweet also teased that Lucas would like to see an animated series that takes place after “Return of the Jedi” and that he hinted that not everyone in the sci-fi universe would stay dead.
What this means isn’t exactly clear, though we’re certain you will have a ton of comments and speculation about it.

The only way I’m buying this is if the original versions are included.

It’d be mighty tricky for them to do a restoration on the original trilogy, seeing as Lucas had all the copies destroyed. :-\
I think I’ll stick with my “limited edition” with the original, non-special, Han-shot-first laser disc versions, thanks. I gave away my VHS copies of the late 90s versions years ago.

Yeah, I’m not likely to buy these. I have the theatrical cuts and Special Editions on DVD, and that’s enough for now. I probably won’t buy another version of the saga until the final “Ultimate Edition” release sometime in the 2050s. 😉

As with most DVD releases, it’s all about the extras and bonus content
