Sony Not Happy With “Green Hornet”

April 16, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 14 Comments

Further proof that Hollywood should listen to our regular and voice mail shows more often. If they’d done that, they might have saved themselves a lot of trouble.

IESB reports that Sony has seen a final cut of the Seth Rogan, Michael Gondry version of “The Green Hornet” and they aren’t happy with it. According to the report, Sony executives think the film is too campy and that Rogan doesn’t look the part of the Hornet.

Sony fears they have a disaster on their hands and that the film could be a critical and commercial failure when released.

Which is what we’ve been saying for a while now right here on Slice of SciFi.

Considering the studio in question, the fact that they hate it makes me want to see it MORE. 😐

Really? They’re just realizing that now?

When Seth Rogan announced he would play the lead campy never came into their minds? I expect they are just being polite and it really just sucks.

Yeah, I’m in the “well, what did you think you were going to get?” camp.

Maybe the folks who let that approval slide by were Twittering, or updating their Facebook pages and therefore weren’t paying complete attention to the proposal.

This is like standing in front of a bullet train and then, just seconds before impact thinking, “Gee, maybe this isn’t a good idea.”

I will go see The Green Hornet no matter what! It has Seth Rogen in it!

In the last few years I’ve watched a few Rogan movies, and while I was not previously familiar with his work, it did not take long before the “no Rogan movies” proposal was put to a vote at our house.

It was close, but by a vote of 2-0 the “no Rogan movies” rule is now in full force.

As much as I like the Green Hornet, once he was announced for the role the movie ceased to be a part of my universe. The only thing worse would have been Joss writing the script, for then I would be assured Kato would die to “make us care for the character”, and to impress upon us “they are in real danger, and anything can happen”.

I would laugh, but I was raised not to laugh at the misfortune of others, even if it brought about by their own stupidity.

Considering the angle they APPROVED, then this seems to be more buyer’s remorse.

I don’t care one way or another if it gets made, but the angle proposed seems funny enough for a Sunday morning matinee.

They cast Seth Rogen, & they didn’t know it was going to be awful?

    Amazing how stupid executives are…

Maybe they can produce something new then instead of just ripping off old TV Shows / Movies – oops I mean reimaging.

They could always save time and money by just digging out the old scripts for the originals and just using those with the new actors 😉

What really gets me fired up is now there will be no attempt to make a Green Hornet movie again for a long time. This was a property that really did need a refresh. The old B&W serial is dated and due for a “GOOD” remake.

Here’s one that got lost under the bus gang.

No offense to anyone, but Green Hornet never REALLY needed to be made. I think the general audience is happy enough with their Batman and Robin fetishes.

Considering how studio changes ruins films…

I hope that Sony releases the movie as is and let it succeed or fail on Seth’s vision. Who knows it could be good… maybe…

I am not a fan of Rogen, but I do think it deserves to be seen with his vision intact, not gutted by the studio which will guarantee its failure.
