It’s been hailed as the clash of 2-D vs 3-D.
In one corner was the 3-D spectacle of “Clash of the Titans.” In the other was the 2-D comedy vehicle “Date Night” with Tina Fey and Steve Carrell.
And the winner, by a nose, was “Date Night.” According to box office estimates, the debut comedy took in $27.1 million in ticket sales.
“Titans” was just behind it with $26.9 million.
Of course, there are some who will point out that “Titans” overall haul is helped by higher ticket prices for 3-D films.
“Given the competition, we would have been pleased with our number if had put us in fifth place,” says Fox’s Chris Aronson. “It’s obvious 3-D is the future of a lot of movies. Still, people always want a good story and a good laugh.”
The third spot was also taken by a 3-D movie. Dreamworks’ “How to Train Your Dragon” was third with $25.4 million.
Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married Too” and the Miley Cryus’ “The Last Song” rounded out the top five.
