Slice of SciFi #258: VoiceMail Show

April 2, 2010 By Summer Brooks 9 Comments

This is the show where our loyal, adoring, and inquisitive fans and listeners get to hear us comment on their comments about our stories and comments… it’s the Circle of Entertainment Life!

We do want to hear your comments and feedback… No, really, we do! Pay no attention to how much Mike grumbles about them — you know, that guy sitting in the dark corner with all of the blinky lights, the knobs and the scotch.

This week, Mike, Brian, Sam, Bret and Tim respond to the questions and comments posed by your voicemail submissions, and as always, BEWARE SPOILERS!!

Lost is to Brian Brown as BSG was to Evo Terra. And just like then, Brian continues to browbeat anyone and everyone into shutting up whenever they try to say anything positive about Lost. And so only the negative opinions get through. It’s ridiculous!

We have the rousing conclusion to one of the most popular sci-fi shows in recent memory, and Slice of SciFi is being bullied into not talking about it.

John: Same deal with Heroes. Not that only the negative opinions, but the only positive things about Heroes that seem to get through are said by the guy who think V is an expose on the Obama administration.

I’m no fan of Lost, but just do what I do when the Lost talk starts; go make a sandwich. πŸ˜‰

Did I hear me being confused with Arkle? I ask because our gravatars are vastly different.

    . . . plus I don’t make sandwiches when you guys talk.

Yeah, I never made any comment about TBBT, but I figured whoever did would correct Brian.

Actually, I listen to every voicemail and regular episode. Have for quite a few years now. I did hear the discussion in that episode. I’ve also heard the many times where Mike and others say, when you’re not there, how they’re finally allowed to talk about the show without you badgering them the whole time. “Brian’s out, so we get to talk about Lost.”

Obviously, I’m not saying that you’re controlling what can or cannot be said, day in and day out. I’m saying that when people start talking positively about the show, you automatically start saying how it sucks, and that discourages further discussion. And frankly, after three years of that, it gets old. Just like it got old when Evo used to bash BSG any time it was brought up.

You didn’t like the show when you were watching it. We get it! Why not let the others discuss it without shouting them down once and a while?

And damn…God forbid one of your longtime listeners point out something they aren’t enjoying about the show…

Alas, I did not call in . . . bad voice and all guarantees I would not make the cut.

No, I wrote a comment about the homogeneous Big Bang Audience . . . a comment which on the show was attributed to the sandwich guy.

I suppose it could have been worse . . . I could have been confused for Megan Fox Leader.

John – Yep! It’s a VAST conspiracy! See, I secretly run EVERYTHING HERE! I NEVER let ANYONE talk about anything OTHER than what *I* want! Hm. That does sound kinda familiar. hmmm… And obviously you’ve not listened to the Sam and Mike talk that has already happened about Lost.

Arkle – Beauty of a thing to have your own show to talk about what you want to talk about huh? *stuff Arkle into the locker again*

EJ – Maybe? I often forget about what/who we’ve talked about. Of course you might sound like Arkle and I just didn’t hear the name…

LOL! You were trying to convince me? I thought you were just trying to be a smartass!

OK, all kidding aside, let’s not overgeneralize here, or mischaracterize my point. If I disagreed with how the whole show is run, I wouldn’t bother listening to it. And it’s a fair bet that I disagree with just about everyone on the show at one point or another. I mean, come on, as a huge and dedicated B5 fan, I disagree with the whole “reboot” idea, and also disagree with some of the criticisms of that show. So be it.

My point is that a lot of people watch Lost (probably more than the audience for a lot of the other shows you cover), it’s a big thing in SciFi TV right now because it’s ending, and in my opinion, it’s a topic that seems to get shut down when it’s brought up. And since the show is about SciFi, well, maybe you can see how that would be frustrating.

So, enough on that. I have a response to the B5 reboot to formulate…heh heh heh…

John – Since obviously I’m not going to please you or convince you with anything I say – I’ll leave it at we will just have to agree to disagree on a lot of levels, about Lost, about how Slice is run and produced and how each and every one of us has a voice into this show and how not everyone will agree with what each voice says.

Thanks for your input as a long time listener we all appreciate it.

EJ – Ah Sorry about that! I remember that now. I get confused on who comments on the site sometimes especially when you and Arkle do a lot of posting. πŸ™‚
