Milius: New “Red Dawn” Is a Bad Idea

March 31, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 6 Comments

John Milius, the director and writer of the original “Red Dawn” says that the current plans to remake the 1980’s film are a bad idea.

“I think it’s a stupid thing to do. The movie is not very old,” said Milius, who’s not involved in the new film but was given a chance to read the new script. “It was terrible. There was a strange feeling to the whole thing. They were fans of the movie, so they put in stuff they thought was neat. It’s all about neat action scenes and has nothing to do with story.”

Milius says that the decision to change the adversary from the Soviet Union to China doesn’t make much sense to him.

“There’s only one example in 4,000 years of Chinese territorial adventurism, and that was in 1979, when they invaded Vietnam, and to put it mildly they got their [butts] handed to them,“ said Milius, noting that China built a wall to separate itself from invaders. “Why would China want us? They sell us stuff. We’re a market. I would have done it about Mexico.”

OK, I agree with him about this remake being a bad idea, but his alternate idea isn’t much more sensical? Mexico launching a full scale invasion? Something tells me any Meican President would have a hard time getting popular support behind that.

You just can’t have Red Dawn without the Soviet Union. The Chinese are a poor substitute and plus I can hear the shouts of racism now.

Except the Soviet Union doesn’t exist anymore, though if you only watch one cable news network you couldn’t be blamed for thinking otherwise. 😉
