Could We Get Two “Independence Day” Sequels?

March 30, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 7 Comments

For months we’ve heard that 20th Century Fox is eager for a sequel to the blockbuster hit “Independence Day.”

Now it appears we could get not just one sequel to the alien invasion epic but two.

IESB reports that actor Will Smith has signed on for two sequels to the popular film.  The site also reports that the two movies would be filmed back-to-back and would be one long story arc.

As of this report, the studio has not confirmed that Smith has signed or that there would be two sequels.  However, the rumor makes some sense in terms of the box-office draw of Will Smith.  Fox could be trying to ensure that Smith is available for the third installment and would be affordable for the studio.

Like to see it happen, the first one was great in its time. With the new fx that is available today it would be awesom!

I thought they said they weren’t going to make a sequel, and now all of a sudden they say they’re planning TWO movies? Something about this feels odd.

As long as they keep the campy feel the original one had (don’t know if that was intentional or not), and not turn them into serious action flicks, then they might be worth watching.

I remember reading an interview with Dean Devlin saying that he just couldn’t come up with an adequate story for a sequel until the tragic events of 9/11. After having some time to process the events of that day he said a story came to him somehow revolving around 9/11 that would make for an excellent sequel.

Perhaps he just waited and polished the story so that it would remain within the boundaries of good taste.

Give me a break PLEASE 🙁 We do not need 2 more pieces of crap. The plot was laughable, the solution not even remotely plausible and not even really entertaining. It was full of stock laughs, action and predictable behaviours. Can you tell I think this move sucked?????

However, I did enjoy it the FIRST time I saw it. I just hated it afterwards.

    Let me guess:

This time, the aliens are prepared for us. They’re using Linux now!
