Time Runs Out for Jack Bauer

March 29, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 6 Comments

After eight days of saving the world as we know it, Jack Bauer may finally get to rest this time.

Fox announced that the current season of “24” will be the last.

The series, which debuted in 2001, followed the (allegedly) real-time exploits of a government agent working to fight out threats from terrorists.  In its prime, the show was a critical and fan favorite and won the Emmy for best drama series after its fifth season.  Star Kiefer Sutherland also picked up an Emmy for best actor for that season.

But the writer’s strike and some lackluster seasons have seen an ebb in audience for Fox.  The network decided to pull the plug after the eighth season winds down (the seventh season was delayed by the writers strike in case you’re doing the math at home).

There are reports that NBC could pick up the show for a ninth season or that a feature film using the show’s ticking clock trademark could be on the horizon.

I’ve watched this series since the beginning (and still watching now), but I’m not sad to see it go. I think it’s time.

The feature film is more likely.

The series, unfortunately, has gotten ridiculous. I don’t mind suspending my belife and enjoying the pure audasity of the show… but now, it’s gotten pathetically predictable. The whole Dana subplot alone… my wife called it the 3rd episode… I told her that they wouldn’t do something that stupid and obvious. Wrong was I. Besides, the fact that it was just a HORRIBLE subplot…

It was an cool concept 8 years ago but 24 really has gotten predictable. I probably won’t miss it.
