Last Friday, news broke that actor Chris Evans has been offered the part of Steve Rodgers aka Captain America for the upcoming movie adaptation.
Many fans were holding their breath that Evans might pass on the role or that a previous film commitment might now allow him to take the role.
Well, it appears that wish was not granted. Evans has accepted the role and will be the new big-screen Captain America.
Supposedly, after thinking about it for a few days, the actor decided that yes, he was willing to wield Cap’s shield, and negotiations moved ahead quickly, with the dealmaking moving so fast that all that’s left is dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.
Marvel would not comment on the development, and CAA, which represents the actor, declined comment.
Evans has already been part of the Marvel movie universe, starring as Johnny Storm aka the Human Torch in both “Fantastic Four” movies.
Marshal says
Sometimes I wish I didn’t follow the news events on this forum, not because they are not good, but because I have too much information. Had I not known that Ryan McParttlin (Captain Awesome) was up for the role, I might have taken this better. I mean you look at the guy’s head shots and you think, “That’s Steve Rogers”. And I think his acting ability is a bit downplayed on Chuck.
However, I probably would have still been skeptical. I think it is risky to use Evans because he played screwball, self-centered Johnny Storm so well in the FF movies. I really liked him as Johnny Storm. But Steve Rogers? Cap? It’s a tough sell. However, I hope I am completely wrong.
Ed from Texas says
Agree – “Captain Awesome” from Chuck would have been a better choice.
Lejon from Chandler says
Chris Evans can’t pull off Captian America. Maybe Cap’n ‘merica, but not the Marvel character. OH HELL… This is one of those “Disney-fications” isn’t it? Would much rather have seen John Barrowman in the part.
BMid says
Jensen Ackles should be Captain America.
How did this happen? Utterly ridiculous. Evans better play this straight. He better not camp this up.
Summer Brooks says
Ya know, I can also see Jensen Ackles as Captain America. Now you’ve got me sad about this.
KG from DC says
Based upon the possible premise of the film from what’s been reported… I definitely like him for this role. I had no idea who this Captain Awesome guy was, so I looked him up in Google-verse. Uhm… no… he would have been a BAAAAAAAD choice. I’m glad they went with Evans.
kyrann says
Darn. Marshal’s right–Captain Awesome should have gotten the role. Evans should not be allowed to mess this up.
Barry from Athens says
This is such a bad casting decision. For me, the movie now starts with two strikes against it.
Arkle says
One point in it’s favor though is that even if they try they can’t make it worse than the 1st Captain America movie. 😉
Summer Brooks says
Arkle, you do realize that that’s a really low bar to try to get over, right?
Please don’t encourage them to aim low… it doesn’t serve a higher purpose for any of us!
Robin says
Huh. Well, okay, not my first choice, but I haven’t seen any of his work in the last few years beyond FF. Maybe he’s more mature than his previous roles would suggest?
bocoe says
This movie has DUD written all over it! I watched Fantatic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer for the first time the other evening and this guy (Chris Evans) was absolutely nerve wracking as the Human Torch. I will wait for it to come to cable, if I watch it then.
KG from DC says
I’m more concerned with the CA in general than I am with Chris Evans. Considering it’s “The Rocketeer” Director… oy.
KG from DC says
EDITED – I’m more concerned with the CA *movie* in general than I am with Chris Evans. Considering it’s “The Rocketeer” Director… oy.
Kurt in St. George says
Bocoe, you nailed it. Jessica Alba wasn’t the only non-actor in the FF movies. Also, “The Rocketeer Director?!” They’ve got to be kidding with that choice. This looks like it should go straight to video, but it won’t. CA will get a huge advertising budget. I suspect it will bomb anyway. Hell of a way to kill a classic character franchise before it even starts.
