What is wrong with the Sci Fi channel (I refuse to use that new mark. Makes me think Stir Fry when I see it), 1st the SGu which had script writers from Battle Star who never watch SG-1, then this prime time sci fi knockoff of “The Young and The Restless” called Caprica.
Drive a stake into the show and cut it’s heart into 4 pieces[1] before it spins off another loser BSG property.

I didn’t really like Caprica when it started but I usually give shows a whole season to find their feet and I am glad I did because I am liking it now. Liking not loving.
BTW why do so many Americans say “could care less”? The expression is “couldn’t care less” as in you don’t care about it at all.

It’s been a really slow start, but I’m willing to give it the full season before I decide whether or not I’ll be back for season two.
I have a real good reset button with shows. I was never expecting Galactica. I think it has had some moments and it’s generally well produced. Greystone trying to coax out the Zoe avatar was brilliant. I like it but wouldn’t be too sad if it went away yet. It’s not as good as SGU which is the second best thing to come out of Syfy since BSG.
Mic7says
I didn’t really find it all that interesting to start with…thought I’d give it a try because of BSG but as time went on it started to really grow in me. It’s gone from a show I let play in the background while I was doing something else to a show that I put everything aside to watch.
I thought at first the Zoe storyline with her father would be the thing to grab my attention and even though I still like it the recent storyline of Joseph Adama trying to find Tamara in New Cap city has really blown my mind…I love it…the storyline…the way they filmed it…it’s wonderful. Definitely want to see more.
Robinsays
The plot is really starting to go to some interesting places and ask some tricky questions. (Plus, the visual style is quite striking.) I look forward to seeing what happens in the second half of the season.

I DVR it, but it’s at the bottom of the list. I think I still have a 2 or 3 episodes to catch up on still. It’s not wowing or making me take much notice in any sense of the words. It’s.. okay. It’s… background filler. I know you guys like to hype stuff, but this is average at best.
Glennsays
It’s moving a bit slow for me. Unless they speed up the pace somehow, they will lose me. Great acting. Good Effects. Not liking the story arc speed.
TallGrrlsays
Will people PLEASE stop saying that this show “isn’t Battlestar”!
It’s NOT Battlestar! It was NEVER supposed to BE Battlestar.
And the fact that it’s a Soap…is that a BAD thing?
It’s a Soap…with Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Whatever underpinnings.
Me? I’m just glad it’s not wrasslin’…aka Soap Opera for Dudes.
BTW, I’m finding Caprica really compelling. For me it really kicked in around the 3rd episode.
In addition to the writing and acting, I like how they’ve not skimped on giving us a look into Tauron culture, from the language, and the fact that there’s a cuisine to special ceremony to release the dearly departed. “The Ferryman” receiving the coins, obviously a shout out to the Ferryman who takes the dead across the River Styx, spoke to the Mythology Geek in me.
Anyway, I think the show has made good progress from the pilot movie, and I’ll definitely be waiting for Season 2.

TallGrrl, You perhaps miss point it is set in BSG universe, except it is prequel?
lowssays
I have to agree with my friend Tall girl here. It’s not meant to be. It’s a drama, perhaps back story, perhaps prequel. Doesn’t not matter, it’s a good storyline; being well acted for the more part and isn’t like everything thing else on that channel. Give it a shot, you don’t like it, move on. Would you feel better if it was called something else?
It is a slow build, but the story is still interesting. No one expects it to be the same as BSG; at least I hope not. The story of Caprica is not the world of BSG… it is not about a civilization driven to the brink of extinction, fleeing an enemy bent on destroying them, and how to survive without losing themselves (their humanity) in the process. The drama, the relationships, the conflicts are going to be vastly different.
The story of Caprica deals with the impact of major scientific/technological leap introduced into a society that wasn’t yet ready for it, the emotional impact on people dealing in different ways with grief, loss and denial, and quite possibly how easy it is to blur the lines between “can I” and “should I” when those emotions are clouding the judgment of those involved.
How many scifi stories have we seen where someone tried to clone a dead loved one, because in the throes of grief they just wanted that person to be alive again?
I can appreciate the differences between BSG and Caprica, and I have fun trying to see how all of the things happening now lead up to what we’ve already seen in BSG, but it’s not the only reason to watch the show. I watch because the show on its own is still interesting to me, and I would love to see how long they spin the tale, and in what direction they take it.
I like Caprica’s character-driven story better than Battlestar Galactica where too much emphasis is on space war scenarios and FX graphics.

Well I love it. I bought the DVD of the pilot and that hooked me. Then the first few episodes came out and I enjoyed them, but not quite as much as the pilot. I’ve watched the show regularly since then and I must admit it’s the best thing on SyFy these days, next to maybe Destination Truth. The quality of writing, the filmography, the stories, really is better than most of what’s on the networks and it holds its own against its predecessor in every way. At times, I think it’s even better – I’m not trolling, I’m being honest – and this is coming from a guy who’s been watching BSG since the 70s. It’s an excellent show and I hope to God that they bring it back, it’s the only thing that brings any credibility to SyFy. On a side note, please let that awful Stargate thing die already; it wasn’t even that great of a movie when it came out, for crying out loud. (See, now that’s trolling!)

I think that when people say, “It’s no Battlestar.” They don’t mean to compare the content as not being the same. What they are trying to say is that, for them, it is not the same as far as QUALITY. I agree with them. It has interesting ideas, but so far, has not been presented in an entertaining way. Obviously, for some, they feel it is plenty entertaining. But, on the whole, most people feel it is lacking in it’s presentation not it’s concept. I’d be fine with or without space battles. If it wants to be a soap opera without pew pew…fine…just be a good one. So far, it has not been IMHO. And, I want to like it very much…but so far it isn’t working. They even admit it in the podcasts. Eick says himself it’s lacking Gravitas!

I’m not sure what to make of Caprica. Well produced and acted, but do we really need to see this story??? It reminds me of BSG: Razor. We knew the story before it happened. Did we need to actually see it? Same thing with the Star Wars prequels.
Yes, I have been watching it. Now that we’re at the midpoint of the season I’m hoping it’s all been set-up to this point. If it’s more mindless wanderings (like “Lost”) I’m done. I’ll give it unitl the end of the season to have a purpose. I’m willing to give something with potential a chance to grab me. If you can’t do that in one season, forget about it.

As mentioned, there is good production value… and a valiant attempt to create a universe of its own – but it’s not. Battlestar Galactica was part of a unique universe and owned it. Caprica, unfortunately, has pandered too much on our cyber culture and trends instead of offering something completely uprooting and foreign as any alien culture would have evolved. At least not to try to ‘sell’ to an audience, but more to enthrall, discover and offer a truly new life form that has roots of its own…the script should have gone way beyond this neat formulaic approach…
