New “Doctor Who” Trailer Debuts

February 22, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 12 Comments

A new trailer for the Matt Smith era of “Doctor Who” has arrived.

It offers little in the way of new footage from the upcoming fifth series, but the trailer does contain SPOILERS on some of the adversaries the Doctor and Amy Pond will face in the upcoming series.

    “That one’s blinking.”
    “Yeah, sorry, thought I’d fixed that.”

    That would’ve sold me on Eleven if I hadn’t been already.

    I want to preface my comment by saying when it was announced that David Tennant was leaving I was going to give the new guy the beneifit of the doubt. I didn’t give this same benefit of said doubt to David Tennant when he was going to replace Christopher Eccleston but I was proven wrong though I still think both actors played the Doctor quite well. Now, all that being said I wasn’t entirely sure about Matt Smith and thats mostly his age. David Tennant is 11 years older than the 28 year old Matt Smith and looks older. Matt Smith looks so young and that was the source of my wariness and even the first teaser trailer didn’t do much to assuage my misgivings but this little spot has convinced me.

    When he says “”Everywhere and anywhere, every star that ever was. Where do you want to start?”” and even when he says “I’m The Doctor” is enough to convince me he is going to be a great Doctor. After seeing this I finally understand Stephen Moffat meant by Matt Smith being able to play well beyond his actual age. In the words of the late tenth Doctor “It’s going to be fantastic”

    I think Neil Gaiman summed it up nicely on Twitter last week;

    “@neilhimself You ALWAYS don’t like the new Dr Who. It’s a rule. You miss the last one. But after a few weeks (or less) he’s the Doctor. It’s inevitable.”

    I don’t love the effects in this particular ad, but I have solid hopes for Mr. Smith, particularly in the skilled hands of Mr. Moffat.

    @Ben — Yes, I believe it was. 🙂

    Maybe I’m the only one who thinks this, but that teaser trailer is really corny. I almost felt like I was watching a teaser trailer for “The Sarah Jane Adventures”.

    Regardless, I’ll still give the show the benefit of the doubt. I mean, it is “Doctor Who”. It’s just that I remember the new showrunner stating that this new season was going to be more serious and less silly than the last couple of seasons. But if the show is like this teaser, then it’s the opposite.

    I didn’t think it was corny at all, it was a lot of abstract fun and I think SM is going to bring back a big sense of fun and adventure to the show. Not that the show has lacked those things for last four years but it’s getting a second wind which I am really looking foward to.

    I went through most of Tennant’s first episodes going, ‘”Where’s the edge?” and “Where’s the flaws?”” Eccleston has, and will always be my Doctor.. I love Tennant, but it took me awhile to get used to him.

    I have seen a few minutes of Smith,a dn I can tell, he’s going to be at least as good as some of the previous doctors. I Maybe I am the only one, but when I see him in this, he does not look like that 23 year old kid we saw. There’s somthing about him I already like. I can’t really put my finger on it.

    THE VIDEO YOU ARE TRYING TO WATCH CANNOT BE VIEWED FROM YOUR CURRENT COUNTRY OR LOCATION.

    Stupid region-coding garbage.

    Saw this trailer in the UK cinemas just before Alice in Wonderland and they had 3Ded it! Worked really well in 3D, esp the weeping angel jumping out at you.

    The more and more I see, the more I like, esp with some of what has been said in subsequent trailers!

    Do like the star blinking reference, very nice one liner. Really like the reference to the Dalek’s in another trailer when Amy asks what they fear and he just says ‘Me’.
