Gaiman’s “Doctor Who” Episode Will Air in 2011

February 8, 2010 By Mike Hickerson 3 Comments

Ever since the news broke that “Doctor Who” was returning, there’s been a persistent rumor that award-winning novelist Neil Gaiman was working on an episode for the series.

As each season unfolded and the writers were announced, it appeared to be just a rumor.

At long last, we can move the rumor into the realm of reality as the BBC has announced that Gaiman has written an episode that will be part of series six in 2011.

Called “The House of Nothing,” Gaiman told an audience at the recent a sci-fi convention in Sussex that he’d just turned in the script.

“As anyone who’s read my blog knows, I’m a big fan of a certain long-running British TV series. One that I started watching – from behind the sofa – when I was three.

“And while I know it’s cruel to make you wait for things, in about 14 months from now – which is to say, not in the upcoming season but early in the one after that – it’s quite possible that I might have written an episode.

“And if I had, it would originally have been called ‘The House of Nothing’. But it definitely isn’t called that any more.”

Makes sense. It took him four years to turn in the Babylon 5 script. Taking five years to turn in a Doctor Who script seems appropriate.

Can’t wait! I think the era of Stephen Moffat will be a good one.

And the internets let out a collective SQUEE!

To be fair, I don’t think it’s actually taken him five years to write it. I think it’s just been a matter of the production team making the offer at a point when he had the time to actually do it. He’s been a busy guy the last few years.
