Momoa Tapped As Conan

Momoa Tapped As Conan

January 26, 2010 By News Droid 7 Comments

jason_momoa“Stargate: Atlantis” alum Jason Momoa has been tapped for the lead role in the upcoming reboot of “Conan the Barbarian.”

The movie, which sees Conan seek to avenge his slaughtered father and tribe, will shoot in mid-March in Bulgaria.

Momoa was one of two finalists for the role.  He won the part over “Twilight” actor Kellan Lutz.

Momoa is also part of the pilot for HBO’s “A Song of Fire and Ice.”

Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson, Joe Gatta and George Furla are among the “Conan” producers. Andrew Lobel wrote the script for the project.

Wow, bad news for the Song of Fire and Ice. Unless he’s had some acting lessons I don’t see this cat playing anything other than a surfer.

Great pick! It will be nice to see him in the role. ‘Atlantis’ ended too soon. I wish we got to see more about his character.

Jason is a much better actor than Arnold can ever be. This is an excellent choice to reboot the Conan character.

@Skizknot: I guess you haven’t seen him on SGA then…? Ronon is decidedly un-surfer-like. In a badass soldier / sword-wielding warrior kind of way.

I’ve seen people on other sites complaining that he’s “not big enough” (as in “not on a sh*tload of steroids like Shwarzenegger was”), but I think a leaner, more agile Conan will be pretty good. Man already knows how to fight with swords and hand-to-hand, and can pick up choreography quickly. Just ask James Bamford and Mark Dacascos.

@Robin, SGA is the only place I saw him and I found his acting very much like some high school kid in detention and he dragged SGA down for me. He made Keanu Reeves look like Sr. Ian McKellan imo. I’m sure he’s fine for the Conan look I just found un-compelling as an actor. I’m sure I would have loved the Ronon character when I was 10.
