James Cameron is the new king of the world.
His latest movie, “Avatar” has knocked off his previous movie, “Titanic” as the top grossing in the world.
20th Century Fox confirmed Monday that the movie has now passed $1.292 billion in world-wide ticket sales, passing “Titanic” for the all-time box-office king.
The latest No. 1 weekend overseas tally was $108.3 million grossed from 11,925 screens in 111 markets. It was the sixth consecutive weekend that “Avatar” grossed more than $100 million on the foreign circuit.
Meanwhile, the movie is just $49 million short of passing the domestic box-office record set by “Titanic.”
Hollywood experts expect “Avatar” to break or surpass that record in the next week.

It just goes to show you that with enough hype you can get people to pay money to see the worst crap in the world. Cameron isn’t known for his originality.
I think “worst crap in the world” is a bit harsh. The story was certainly nothing new or unpredictable, but it came in a very shiny wrapper, and the acting was solid. Given a choice between this film and the former heavyweight champion “Titanic” I’ll take this one every time.
Well done James.
And, while I’m at it, did the new king just reincarnate from the old king? ‘Cause it’s like the same guy but a different movie.
“Worst Crap in the World?” Really? REALLY?
Granted, the movie fell short, but “Worst Crap?” “…In the world”
Scifi fans, we are our own worst enemy. Now if this has been Hotel For Dogs, or Beverly Hills Chihuahua, I would be right there with you. But…..”Worst Crap?”
I think you need to watch Battlefield Earth again.
You don’t like it. We get it. But hype does not drive 6 weeks (and counting) of Number One at the Box Office. Word of mouth does. People telling their friends to go see it does. Second (or third, etc.) viewing does.
You don’t like it. The vast majority of the cinema attending world does. And honestly, a significant majority of the sci fi fans like it well enough… even if it isn’t a new gem.
Not surprised at all. Reminded me of that same feeling when I saw Star Wars for the first time. I thought the hype or commercial adds is what fell short and I went in with a reluctant attitude expecting the worst. But came out blown away . Brilliant use of technology
Like I’ve said many times, it’s NOT the best movie [storywise] in the world, but it’s one of the best all-around movie experiences I’ve ever had… and I remember how blown away I was sitting watching Star Wars for the first time. It’s not about what it didn’t do, it’s success is attributed to what it DID do. It gave people an experience unlike ANYTHING they’ve ever had at a movie before. That’s fact. The only thing I can say was almost as cinematically as beautiful was “Up”.
