“Lord of the Rings” Coming to Blu-Ray

December 15, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning “Lord of the Rings” trilogy is coming to Blu-Ray.

Warner Home Video will release a Blu-ray box set of the “Rings” trilogy April 6, marking the first time the titles have been released in the HD format. Suggested retail price for the nine-disc set is $99.98.

No word yet on extras or if this will be the theatrical cuts, extended cuts or both on the Blu-Rays.

Actually, it’s very well known that these are just going to be the theatrical releases.

Just say no to this one.

I find this puzzling. Apparently there ALREADY is a Blu-Ray version of LoTR. I’ve seen it available on Amazon.com and everyone who has watched it says it’s absolutely terrible.

Amazon.com also says that there is a projected year the extended versions of the entire trilogy is scheduled sometime in either 2011 or 2012.

    Ben,

If you are talking about this one:

    http://www.amazon.com/Lord-Rings-Picture-Theatrical-Editions/dp/B000X9FLKM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1260971591&sr=8-1

That is the one that will be released next year. It’s getting preemptively bombed with 1 star reviews as a protest and warning that Warner is trying to double dip with the Blu-Ray release. It’s bad enough when the studios do this with a new release (i.e. release a “standard” version then a year or so later release the enhanced/director’s cut/deluxe edition. It’s inexcusable to do this with a back catalog title. LOTR already carries bad baggage with collectors as Warner did this with the DVD releases many years ago.
