Paramount Considering “Paranormal Activity 2”

October 28, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 2 Comments

paranormalWith “Paranormal Activity” turning into the blockbuster event of the fall season, Paramount is mulling over the prospect of a sequel.

“We have the rights on a worldwide basis to do Paranormal 2 and we’re looking to see if that makes some sense,” Paramount Chairman Brad Grey said in an interview quoted by LA Times.

“Activity” was made on a small budget of $15,000 and has raked in $62.5 million in ticket sales so far in the United States. The film is being compared to “The Blair Witch Project” not only for its presentation but also its word-of-mouth marketing campaign.

Of course, we all know what happened when “Blair Witch” went for a sequel–it flopped at the box-office and is one of the more critically derided movies of all time. Let’s hope that “Activity” won’t follow the same route and that a sequel won’t diminish the film’s legacy.

So…let me get this straight: a movie that cost $15,000 to make has made SIXTY-TWO MILLION dollars in its first, what, 2 weeks? Week and a half?
And they’re going to make a sequel.

My question is: Where is the “news” part of this whole thing?

Thats right, the movie studio needs to spend $30 – 40 million on the sequel; probably bring in different writers and director so the next one will have as little to do with original as possible, and pull in only $20 million at the box office and wonder what went wrong.
