Kindler Offers “Sanctuary” Hints

Kindler Offers “Sanctuary” Hints

October 23, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 20 Comments

Fans of SyFy’s series “Sanctuary” may have been shocked with some of the events in last week’s episode.

If you’ve not seen the episode yet and don’t want to know details that are definitely SPOILER material, please turn back now….

In the final moments of the episode, Ashley vanished in a fiery blaze after r being transformed into Super Abnormal Ashley by that nasty Cabal and leading an attack against Magnus.

The moment may leave some fans wondering if Ashley’s time on the show is at an end.

Producer Damian Kindler says that fans will find out within the first three episodes of the second season.

“The fate of Ashley will be determined in the first three episodes,” promised creator and executive producer Damian Kindler. “It gets really intense. It gets dark. We’re not afraid to get very emotional in the way the characters interact. That’s one of the signatures of Sanctuary.”

The third episode in the arc, “Eulogy,” airs tonight on Syfy at 10 p.m. ET with Magnus searching for her daughter, who she believes is still alive, while Druitt thinks she’s dead and seeks revenge against the Cabal.

We won’t have to wait long to learn if Ashley survives the Cabal’s devious plan, which morphed her into a vampirey teleportation sort of super-Abnormal super-soldier with glowing red eyes and big claws. Beyond the claws and eyes and stuff, we knew it wasn’t our Ashley because her hair was pulled back and she sneered and moved really fast unless Magnus was around. Of course she was still dressed in slick black and, I’ve been told, looked smoking hot.

This past episode was horrible. The fight scenes were poorly staged, predictable and boring. If this show continues this way I will stop watching. Too bad I was liking it until this past week.

I guess this means she’s dead, right? Are they going to change the opening credits? Because in the third episode, they’re still showing Will, Magnus, and Ashley standing together.

I was originally looking forward to the new season of Sanctuary. If the first three episodes have been any indication, then the rest of the season is set up to fail big time. Whomever sat and watched the first Incredible Hulk movie and thought, OOH We can incorporate split scenes and zoom in on the one we want to move from character to character should have his directors high-chair removed. And with killing off characters from the first season, and the introduction of this new freelance character they have taken a step backwards, because all she does is distract from the scenes. Finally the CGI which was decent in the first series has taken a step back and feels to me more obvious and with the other two flaws I hope that they fix it real soon. If not bring back replays of Wharehouse 13, much more enjoyable than what they are serving us now.

Have to completely disagree with some of the above comments. I think the first few episodes of season 2 of sanctuary have been outstanding. I think it was very brave of them to go down the route of killing off a character. Think amanda tapping’s performances in responding to that death has been nothing short of outstanding. Sanctuary’s definitely the show i’m making sure not to miss. Long may it continue.

“We can incorporate split scenes and zoom in on the one we want to move from character to character.”

I hated that when they started to do it on “Burn Notice”. And, of course, they also do it on “24”, but on there it makes sense, because it’s all in real-time.

“I was originally looking forward to the new season of Sanctuary. If the first three episodes have been any indication, then the rest of the season is set up to fail big time.”

Just replace the phrase “the new season of Sanctuary” with “Stargate Universe” and that statement would be more correct. “Sanctuary” has had a far better start this season than SGU.

Killing one of the main characters, especially this early in the series was a mistake. I liked Ashley (she was one of the main reasons I watched) and I don’t like the new character AT ALL. The team dynamic was fine and you should have built on it rather than rearrange it because you wrote your characters into a corner. Not worried about Emilie Ullerup because she will find bigger and better things to do, but what a waste of a great character.

And I don’t think their decision was so much a brave one, as much as a really stupid one. The ratings will suffer and they’ll be regretting that decision for a long time.

The split screen thing is getting old as well. It’s ok, but they’re overusing it.

Save your show DK and bring back Ashley. Ditch the smartass Kate.

There are three main things that could kill this season for me.
    1) As with all of you, Ashely was one of the best parts of this show and the storyline with her battling between light and dark (good and evil) is old, tired, and just cliche’. That is not always a bad thing, and could have worked with the right set of circumstances, BUT, then they kill her off? Really? Strike one.
    2) The replacement character is frustrating, annoying and has so rubbed me the wrong way that I don’t care if she does grow up and becomes a decent person. Her past actions far outweigh any growth, and the only way she can earn redemption is to spend the rest of the season trying to right all her past wrongs. (Ok… if they did that, they could save her character.) I’m not holding my breath that it will happen. Strike Two.
    3) While Amanda Tapping’s performance was amazing, it was totally counter to her character. I understand what they were trying to do, but I would like to have seen the death of Ashley not completely consume her and kill all her rational judgment, but instead have it be devastating after the common sense and strength of her many, Many decades of life experience has kicked in. With all her long life, she should be a much more calm sage and be able to control her emotions. (Not that she does not have them, but that they do not effect the job at hand.) I want Magnus to be a female vers. of Merlin. Strike three.

Over all, the show still has great elements, but I am less happy with this season than last. I hope they get this on track soon.

I just started watching Sanctuary Pavor Nocturnus being the first episode that I have seen. I personally am hooked. I went back and watched every episode for this season on ON Demand. Being a fan girl of syfy shows for years I can understand some of the reactions above on the lose of a character viewers become attached to and perhaps some of the other criticisms. However looking at it with fresh eyes I personally think this show truly rocks. So far I see the writing as fresh and imaginative and the acting outstanding. I personally like the Kate character. Hopefully they wont morally wash her down to the point of boredom. The conflict should continue to raise its ambiguous head in order to keep her interesting. I love the show and will absolutely continue to watch it and support it. I WANT the show to succeed. As far as the “arm chair” criticisms (I refuse to watch the show!) thats just typical of people who don’t have an ounce of their own talent and some sense of “entitlement” when it comes to their entertainment. Having been a gamer since 1979 I’ve seen and heard it all on this kind of ranting in game forums for years. Sanctuary is a fantastical idea that is so far implemented wonderfully ! I wish the writers all the “abnormal” powers they can get as they envision the future of this story line!

“Pavor Noctunus” was indeed great – but the previous episode about the action hero was not. The problem is, the episodes are too distant in tone from each other and season two has no clear direction. Having said that, I hope this direction manifests itself soon in the course of the next few episodes.

I saw Damian sent the following tweet to the Sanctuary portal page:

    damiankindler
RT @stern3000: Nothing like a good Showrunner/Critic throwdown! The debate is invigorating: http://bit.ly/2wuPhl

The debate he is referring to is a back and forth between SGU’s executive producer Brad Wright, and TV critic Maureen Ryan over SGU’s falling ratings.

After the ‘bold’ ‘strong’ move of (bizarrely) killing off a main character after a successful first season, here are the Sanctuary episode numbers so far:

    10/9 –1.85 million viewers
    10/16– 1.766
    10/23 –1.694
    10/30 –1.606
    11/6 — 1.420

Next up in the critic’s crosshairs: Damian Kindler.

DK, get ready for an invigorating debate.

I’m sorry, but replacing Ashley with Kate was a terrible idea. Someone at NBC needs to rein the Syfy execs in so they don’t keep ruining shows with their “bold” ideas. Why would someone watch new SyFy shows when it’s safe to assume that the SyFy execs will interfere and ruin the show? Count me as one less viewer for Sanctuary unless Ashley returns.

I agree. Killing Ashley is just plain dumb. Kate can not replace her. I also agree that the episodes have been all over the place (like watching old Star Trek reruns). Look at the sucess of SG1, Babylon 5 and others.

Wake up DK and smell the ratings.

I don’t think DK is really running things. I know AT said she fought to keep Ashley on the show, and both she and SK have been pointing the finger at SyFy with regards to Ashley’s death. The SyFy people have of course been hiding in their offices and letting the Sanctuary people take the heat and defend a decision they disagreed with.

They started Season 2 with 1.85 million viewers and ended with 1.493 million. Wow, that bold, brave move sure paid off didn’t it? It did if your goal was to lose a sizable chunk of your audience.

DK, you tried to fix what wasn’t broken. Now it is broken, and hopefully the geniuses at syfy will realize it and let you fix it.
