Kelloggs Will Burn Logo Onto Corn Flakes

Kelloggs Will Burn Logo Onto Corn Flakes

October 14, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 7 Comments

cornflakes_laserWe’re slowly getting closer to the future predicted by movies like “Blade Runner” and “Minority Report.”

Kelloggs has announced that it is looking into using a laser to burn its logo onto individual corn flakes.  That way when you’re enjoying a bowl of corn flakes, you’ll know whose corn flakes they are.

The company has become so concerned about similarly packaged supermarket cereals, it has developed a laser to burn its logo on to individual Corn Flakes.

The concentrated beam of light creates a toasted appearance without changing the taste.

Kellogg’s will produce a number of trial batches before considering whether to put some branded flakes into each box to guarantee authenticity.

If the system is successful it could be used on Kellogg’s other best-loved brands including Frosted Flakes and  Special K.

Kellogg’s embarked on the project to reinforce that they don’t make cereals for any other companies and to fire a shot across the bows of makers of ‘fake flakes’.

Helen Lyons, lead food technologist at the company, said: ‘In recent years there has been an increase in the number of own brands trying to capitalise on the popularity of Kellogg’s corn flakes.

‘We want shoppers to be under absolutely no illusion that Kellogg’s does not make cereal for anyone else,” a company spokeperson said.

We’re constantly looking at new ways to reaffirm this and giving our golden flakes of corn an official stamp of approval could be the answer.

‘We’ve established that it is possible to apply a logo or image onto food, now we need to see if there is a way of repeating it on large quantities of our cereal. We’re looking into it.’

The company also released figures which show sales of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes have risen in 2009 as shoppers with limited budgets opt for recognised brands.

A staggering 128 billion bowls of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes are eaten worldwide every year.

OK, I understand the point behind Brand recognition, but how far do you really have to go? Isn’t this just a little bit on the Over-Kill side of life?

Granted, The Mouse has his head made into American Cheese slices…

I hope they have a wind turbine to power that freakin’ laser. What a waste.

And paying off that laser will increase the price how much? People are buying non-Kelloggs corn flakes because they’re less expensive. I mean, they’re friggin’ corn flakes. Not a lot of room for variation, no matter who makes them.

How long before corporate America wants to laser burn their logos on consumers themselves? Perhaps they’ll offer discounts or free merchandise to turn people into living billboards. Why get a tattoo of a dragon or some fake tribal spiky thing around your arms when you might get a free X-Box 360; with warranty, for having the X-Box 360 lasered into your forehead. Would Apple fan boys be willing to show their allegiance to Steve Jobs and company by having iPod touch burned onto their upper arms? Scary thought but I wouldn’t bet against it happening.

Oh yea; about the above comments, Robin is right on the money.
